Dorman 926-990 Flexible Steering Coupler

The part fit perfect. Tore something else up putting it in.

We thought we were having suspension or steering front-end issues but it turns out that this little part was the culprit. It acts as a coupler between the electric steering motor and the rest of the steering system and once this part wears out then the steering system's sensors start over-reacting to any bumps in the road. So when you hit a bump then the sensor tries to assist in keeping the steering stable, but the worn out coupler makes everything "loose" and that's when you feel and hear the popping noises in the steering wheel. I found a couple good how-to videos on YouTube and was able to do the work myself. You need the following to do the repair: 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets T30 torx bit socket Flathead screwdriver or small flat bar Phillips screwdriver Important: There are two screws that you have to remove first by turning the steering wheel 90 degrees, and then you re-straighten the steering wheel. Then disconnect the negative battery terminal and let the car sit for at least 20 minutes to allow the air bag systems to dissipate any residual charge, otherwise you risk triggering the air bags when you unhook their couplers during the repair work. The rest of the process is too much to write here in a review but there are plenty of good how-to videos that can walk you through it all. Not a quick or easy repair (mainly because of the cramped space underneath the steering column) but well worth the trouble to replace a $10 part versus paying a small fortune in labor costs at a repair shop. Once I replaced this part, then our car felt back to normal.

My steering wheel began to clunk so after some research I found out this part could be the culprit, so I ordered this part. We chose this part, although it cost a little more, but it should have the better quality of alloy steel support to hopefully last longer when compared to the other options that may only be made of plastic. Part came in fast, easy to install on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT & now my steering wheel works like new. Pictured is the old part and what it looked like when I took it out and what it should look like and installed. I think it is a great value for the price we paid.

While the replacement process was a pain in the neck, once done, the steering in my 2013 Sonata is dramatically better. The coupler in my car was original and based on the picture, was pretty well useless. After taking it out and cleaning the bits and pieces, then replacing with this new coupler and putting everything back together, the steering is much smoother and there is no longer a click or clunk when turning the wheel, especially at low speeds, particularly when parking. I wish I would have known about this part a while ago. I also wish Hyundai would have either made this part out of something a bit sturdier, or made this a bit easier to access for replacement. There are plenty of YouTube videos on the process, including all of the tools, and which wires/harnesses to move. You don’t have to remove the whole steering assembly like I did. It just makes it easier to get at everything.

Works great but hard to install

Dorman is a known brand so I felt confident buying this. It fit correctly. The steering still had a little clunk but I attribute that to likely an issue with the motor. Still, the steering was much improved.

Don't bother with the genuine Kia/Hyundai part. It's soft rubber and WILL eventually eat itself alive again. Dorman for the win to produce a better solution. It's not a hard repair, just a bit time-consuming.

This tiny part resolved my steering wheel clicking problem but I will never replace it again because it was an absolute bear.

installation of the coupler took a fair bit of time coupler itself seems good quality You would want to be reasonably handy about a car mostly it was removing interior panels and unplugging numerous wiring leads you will find very good demonstrations and tips on you tube good luck

Our 09 elantra was clunking back and forth in the steering motor. While it was a bit of a pain to replace this piece i was glad I did. The original had all the little arms worn off. If you are replacing this yourself keep in mind after putting it back together it may trigger the EPS light on your dash and the steering sensor/computer could need to be recalibrated so it knows the steering wheel is facing straight when it is physically facing straight.
