Are the soft-edged versions in fact different in thickness than the standard self-warming blankets (XL)?

I bought the little one, not quilted and it really didn't work. I don't know about the quilted ones.

Could you use this AND straw for outside house, with no electricity it shouldn’t cause a problem right?

It is just their body warmth that keeps them warm. This pad just insulates their heat. I purchased 3 of these pads for the 3 cat houses for 3 feral cats. I placed straw on top of the pad and they adapted to it right away. One of the mats is placed on top of straw on the ground, and then more straw on top of the pad. (behind a pallet leaning against the house) He has burrowed his way down to the pad and much of the straw is surrounding the pad.. He continues to sleep there on the pad. Obviously these seem to be working for them.
