Large Advent 10 Inch Foam Speaker Repair Kit Masonite Frame FSK-10AD (Pair)

A little over a year ago I purchased this foam edge repair kit for the slightly newer half(1977) of my 4 'stacked' Advents. And they've been working so excellently since, that I came back to purchase another kit for the older pair(1975). That alone speaks to how well they've worked!As for the installation: While I wouldn't call it a breeze, it really wasn't difficult, either...with help from the on-line video & a little common sense!The video can be viewed on YouTube under Advent New-Edge-It Foam Kits.I read somewhere that the glue used was kinda hard to work with. But besides the normal fumes, I didn't find that the case at all. And removing the old foam from the cone lip was easy, allowing the new foam's inner crease to line up perfectly with the cone's edge thereby creating a tight seal. I did have to work a little more by feel on the frame/masonite edge...not too difficult, though. If you have something like an old 'metal' FINGERNAIL file, I think you'll find that it works very well for scraping the old residual foam/glue off this area without the fear of a sharp blade.Back in the early '70s, I helped re-foam an old Altec/Lansing loudspeaker. I remember using much precision in removing the dust cap, making sure the alignment shims all lined up both equally & straight, and carefully timing each phase of 'glue curing' before proceeding, on top of most of the same steps needed here. So, given that the basics aren't that much different with my Advent woofer, I was somewhat skeptical concerning the ease of cone centering...it just looked too simple on the video mentioned above. But it pretty much worked as illustrated!And don't forget to re-caulk the frame to the cabinet, as these Advents were among the few loudspeakers to take full advantage of an acoustic suspension design. Personally, I use Moretite Weatherstrip & Caulking Cord. When the surround glue had dried, I placed the cone face down on a CLEAN, HARD & FLAT surface. After removing as much of the old Moretite as I could from the woofer frame & the cabinet(something you may want to do "before" attaching the surround), I stacked two 3/8 inch wide strips of cord around the basket's base - flush against the metal. Then I "gently" pushed the cord down on the lip to form the gasket before reinstallation...worked like a charm! By the way: putting 2 of the mounting screws in the woofer frame may help make the alignment with the cabinet 'receptacles' easier.And this is my thank you to Simply Speakers:I first heard of "stacked" Advents at a store called "Pacific Stereo" back in '76. Although the Large Advent pair I already had were - in my opinion - comparable to many of the very highly regarded...& much more expensive...speakers of the time in terms of "real world" applications, I still had to give this stacked Advent system a try. They were placed about 20-25' apart in a sound-comparison room that mostly consisted of the very "highest-end" speakers. I auditioned a variety of them for quite some time...electronics stores used to be helpful that way! With the Double Advent System, I was able to visualize exactly where each instrument was across the entire stage, as the sound 'came to life' right in front of me. And the way the very bottom-end bass just enveloped me was even more amazing. That was the point I became securely hooked.Over the years, friends/neighbors who've listened to them can't believe I don't have a huge sub hidden somewhere in the room!! So it's comforting to know that after all this time, even with the very simple design represented by them, it takes just a little TLC to renew their incredible sound. A friend of mine that knows I'm into music and HiFi told me that he had "some old speakers" and didn't know what to do with them. I looked at them and immediately recognized them as the "Original Advent Loudspeaker", also known as the large Advent. While not a rare speaker, they aren't commonly seen these days. I pulled off the fabric grills, and sure enough, the woofer's surrounds were totally decayed into a mess of sticky, crumbly, gross....stuff.Well, I might know about music and stereo equipment, but I don't know anything about repairing speakers. So the first thing I did was search YouTube. I found videos from this company, Simply Speakers. They demonstrated exactly how to repair this issue that will happen to every speaker from this era. They made it look simple, so I took a chance and ordered the kit.I'm so glad that I did, because it was easy to do and only took me about an hour from start to finish. I hooked them up to my amp, and WOW, I had no idea that they would sound this good. These speakers are from 1971, and this kit gave them a new life so they don't end up in a landfill.I've already got a very nice HiFi (Krell amplification with B&W loudspeakers), but I told my friend that if he doesn't want the Advents then I would be more than happy to keep them. I just might have to find myself a vintage amp to go with them...and convince my wife that I "need" a vintage HiFi to listen to my old music.If you need to re-foam some speakers, buy a kit from this company. Watch their instructional videos. If I can do it, anyone can.

Worked like a charm. Wow! Replacing the foam edge was much easier than I thought it would be. Took some patience and attention to detail, but not difficult at all. Easy to follow instructions included. Online how-to video was also very helpful. My prized vintage Advent 4002 speakers are back to providing an excellent music experience. Highly recommended.

This was a great project. You need to watch the videos carefully and several times. I wore disposable gloves and breathing protection, but that just the way I do things. I would strongly recommend that anyone doing this repair wear eye protection to prevent anything from getting in your eyes when you are scrapping off the old material or bonding on the new rings. The speakers now sound like 1978 again.

Bought these based on good reviews. I hate them and aborted mission while there was still a possibility of not scraping everything entirely a second time. I've done 5 or 6 refoams, all successfully in past. I've ordered from the guy in TN on the large auction site. I found SS surrounds very cheap feeling and the included glue is very difficult to work with. The glue is so intense yet too thin, making any workability impossible due to the fact that you quickly have fingers coated in sticky goo. No tamping any spots around edges because your sticky fingers will grip and pull the surround back out of channel completely. No shims included if you like to lean on those, although the included business card worked for me. Not for the amateur or novice, and again, I believe the surround quality is subpar anyway. You can do better with kits with the included white glue and better surrounds.

Saved loads of $$$ and worked great. Scrapping off the old foam was a pain but worth the effort.

I just received my order and thought that there was only one foam ring. Turns out that the two thin rings were stuck together - they can easily be separated, but be careful of this. I also highly advise viewing the instruction video available on line. One thing not mentioned in the video is to be ready with isopropyl alcohol to quickly clean your fingers after you spread the glue as shown in the video, just before you attach the foam ring.
