quiets exhaust
Second inline muffler on exterior exhaust. Quiets exhaust enough that my neighbor not longer complains.

Works
Won't make your HP quiet, but will significantly reduce the noise level of the exhaust, and the harshness of the sound.

Makes the central vac rather quiet...just what we wanted
I removed an old central vac, and installed the new one in a new location where it just vents into the garage, rather than outdoors, so I wanted it to be as quiet as possible when in use. I got this muffler for that purpose. It works much better than the OEM muffler that I got for our last house's central vac, and helps to make it rather quiet across most of the sound spectrum. Now, about all I can hear from it, even when nearby, is a low-intensity high-frequency sound; all of the lower-frequency range, which was very prevalent in the old vac and our previous house's vac, is well muffled. Inside the house, all that we can hear now is the whoosh of the air at the inlet or hose end, whereas before, when the old vac was in a space adjacent to the garage, we could easily hear the vacuum running while inside of the house. Much better!

Wowzers, that's effective
I got this item thinking it wouldn't help much. I mean... it's a tube full of foam. Boy howdy, was I wrong.I have a crappy bucket head shop vac in a 12'x12' room, and the thing must be nearing infinity decibels. I thought it was the unit as a whole being loud, but upon closer inspection, It has a few main volume sources:- The top heat vent ( pretty loud )- The output hose ( holy wow, it hurts the ears )- Sound emanating through the body and bucket ( minor )This thing doesn't even fit my vacuum, but even if I hang it off the end like a size 16 shoe on a child, the sound on the output hose still drops to nearly zero. It's so quiet I can't even hear it over the heat vent.I handled the rest with a cardboard box padded with dense soundproofing foam, but then I put cedar 1/4" paneling on the box, so balances out, on the fancy meter.tl;drIt works reeeally gud, on the output hose, which is the loudest thing. Just make sure that you identify if there are multiple sound sources, and tackle them separately.

Well made, but my central vac exhaust actually increased.
I bought a very old, 1970's Sears central vacuum to use in the garage for vacuuming out cars etc. This thing is loud enough to wake the dead. I measured about 90dba with no muffler and with the muffler attached it went up to 93-94 dba. The muffler seamed to take some of the harshness out of the sound, but overall it was just as loud.Save your money if you think this will do anything positive.

Noise reduction very impressive
The muffler has been installed on the discharge of a Centra Vac unit. The discharge noise (sound pressure level) was reduced from a screeming 82 db (decibles) to an acceptable 70 db (both measured at 5-feet from the unit. A 10 db reduction translates (roughly) to a 90% reduction of the noise level. Note that 70 db is not particularly "quiet"; however, it is a vast improvement compared to 82 db. Since the vacuum unit is located in the basement, I can barely hear it on the first floor level now.The muffler was an inexpensive solution to an annoying noise problem.

What noise?
Works like a charm. I think a few people misunderstand what it is used for. If you are standing next to your central vacuum it only reduces a small amount. If you listen to the exhaust that pipes outside of the house you will notice a huge difference. I do recommend getting additional pipe to make modifications unless you want to go through the struggle of rigging it like I did.

It worked extremely well
It was extremely easy to attach and it muffled the noise of the exhaust very well. Highly recommended

Yes, it works (for my central vac)
My Central Vac, located in my garage, has no noise suppression so it is very loud. I used a sound meter app on my phone to register the noise level with and without the muffler. Here are the results:At zero feet from the canister, at exhaust port = 80db (without) & 80db (with) -> virtually no effectAt 5 feet from the canister (in the garage) = 73db (without) & 67db (with) -> 75% drop in noise levelAt 15 feet from the canister (in the garage) = 70db (without) & 63db (with) -> 80% drop in noise levelInside the house next to door to garage = 45db (without) & 51db (with) -> 75% drop in noise levelDriveway, outside with closed garage door = 47db (without) & 31db (with) -> 96% drop in noise levelOn the average, it reduced the noise in the house/garage by 75% and 96% outside the house, which is respectable. It worked great for reducing noise going out onto the street...which my neighbors would appreciate.

Best silencer ever
The noise level outside dropped by at least 70%. The central vac is vented under the deck and when it was on before the installation you could hardly carry on a conversation. For those who think it will make the vac less noisy inside the home you are wrong, it works on the exhaust or vent side. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone.

does the job
our vacuum was an Ovo so it's quiet already but added this to it anyhow because I putter around in the room that it's mounted in, seems to help cut down on the high pitched suction/motor noise, does what I wanted.

It works
Just temporary to add in the pipe work. The noise level of vacuum machine has ben dropped down.
