Information you need before you proceed
Use this book as a reference guide after reading through. I found myself wondering if I had gone back to pages I had already read at times. Some things, such as working with children, fit into more than one area in the book. Useful information from courts to keeping friends made in the marriage are covered. The break up of a marriage is an emotional thing. This book will help you keep on track and make sure your rights are addressed if you choose to follow the advice. Unless you work in the court system, it can be intimidating. You can feel like you entered a different world. You will need help with this aspect of your divorce. This chapter even tells you what to look for in an attorney and how to interview him. I liked the links and references to webpages that give you more specific information. Some of the advice is how to cope and how to know when to get professional help for emotional distress. This is for yourself and your children. The stages of emotions one goes through during divorce are explained. After reading this book, you will not feel so alone and isolated. You can better cope with the process and what happens afterwards. In a divorce, other family members are also affected. Advice on how to work with children's relationships with their Ex's family is invaluable. Being there for yourself and your children is the most important thing addressed in the book. this book will keep you from missing out on any of the process and come to an equitable parting.

Mostly Helpful
*Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is a useful and straightforward guide to the divorce process. I found the step-by-step guides for dealing with finances, legal issues, and child custody (chapters one – four and chapter six) accessible and useful. I also thought the glossary and the appendix of divorce-related resources were very helpful. As some have already pointed out, the book tends to repeat information. I also felt that chapters five, seven, eight and nine (the chapters dealing with emotional issues related to divorce) were perfunctory at best and largely unhelpful. Readers looking for information on this kind of subject matter should look elsewhere.

Real roadmap simplifies the divorce process.
I thought this was a clearly written, practical guide that helps reduce the reader's anxiety whilebuilding confidence in regards to the priorities that need to be made when separating or divorcing. Making choices, when there are so many important decisions to make, is certainly overwhelming. The book's step by step approach really does create a roadmap of sorts for the person struggling with the issues related to separation, and perhaps, ultimately, divorce. The detailed information, listing of current resources, easy to follow format and checklists provide a groundwork to follow that helps anyone approaching divorce. It takes a complicated matter and sorts it out effectively. In the first chapter, for those with children, it's stated early to "make your children your firstpriority," starting things off on the right foot in my opinion. The other chapters cover; determiningthe need for a lawyer, finding a lawyer, dividing property and the need to focus on and attend tochildren in the thick of a situation that's not likely of their choosing. References were specificand useful. I'd recommend this book.

Easy to Read, Strong Explanation of Legal Steps to Divorce, Don't Buy for Therapy Advice
The Divorce Survival Guide is practical and informative, an all-you-need-to-know for anyone planning to navigate the U.S. court system for a divorce. It teaches you HOW to be an advocate for yourself and how to solve any problems that you might face, whether you're experiencing an amicable parting or a violent break.Step-by-step, you learn 1)the legal grounds for a divorce, 2) alternatives to divorce (i.e. legal separation, annulment, etc), 3) types of divorce (at-fault, uncontested). It even has a quiz to help you decide whether you should get an attorney, which is very helpful when you are unfamiliar with all the different decision-making components that go into filing for a divorce. The first part of the book, dealing with legal issues and finances, I found to be most practical, for the average person who just don't know the ins and outs of the legal system. The second half does deal with children/custody (also very useful) but also emotions, etc. For people looking for guidance in those areas, this may not be the place to get it--therapy or a book more specific to grieving and/or experiences with divorce would probably be more therapeutic and rich. Overall, the strength of this book was in teaching the things to watch out for when you are going through a divorce.Disclaimer: I received this book free for the purpose of review.
