Whoooooo Hooooooo!
At the end of the 8 Weeks of Phase 1 I lost 14 pounds and 8 inches. This WORKS! *2014 Update at end of Review*I wanted to keep my review short & concise but after reading how others fared on this program I thought I would share my experience too. I am Hypothyroid & in my mid-40's (there are two major issues working against me right there)! Prior to being diagnosed as Hypothyroid I could very easily lose a couple pounds if I wanted to. It took about 2 years before I was diagnosed as Hypothyroid which gave me some serious time to pack on the weight...EEK! NOTHING I did would help me lose weight. Not my clean eating lifestyle and 6 days of exercise. NOTHING! I was feeling so totally hopeless, then I found this book and began reading reviews. To the Reviewers who provided thorough Reviews...THANK YOU! It's because of your thoughtful reviews that I bought this book and that I'm on my way to being `myself' again!I was at my wits end! I was exhausted and crashing by 1pm. Each time I ate a simple carb I was craving sugar (and I'm not a sugar gal!). I worked out 5/6 days a week, ate right (with the exception of an occasional slice of pizza...then the sugar cravings!) and NOTHING was happening! In fact, I would lose a pound and gain 2!!! I was so (SOOOO!) tired of hearing people offering their advice like "work out more", "drink protein shakes for a meal or two each day", "eat less", you name it, everyone had advice (unsolicited at that!). Seriously? You think I didn't try ALL that? I tried everything in the last year short of the Master Cleanse! The problem is, what works for one persons body doesn't always work for another! Especially when they have other things working against them. The Program: During the first 8 weeks you kick fruit, some veg (starchy & sugary ones) and simple carbs (pasta, rice, etc.) unless they fit in to the 5x5 rule (5gms Carbs every 5 hours). I've done a lot of detoxes so during the first 8 weeks kicking rice, pastas, etc. was easy for me. I'm Pescatarian and didn't have any issues with menu planning at all. I didn't have the "grumpies" she talks about for the first couple of days. In fact, I suddenly felt an amazing burst of energy that I haven't felt in a couple years! That was enough to motivate me to keep going. I was bad and got on the scale almost constantly.. DON'T DO THIS! There were a couple weeks where the scale went back and forth and I thought "oh no...here we go...this is where I stop losing weight!" But finally the scale gave in and KAPOW! Weight dropped! As I move into Phase 2 I'm a bit freaked out...I've lost without the carbs (I've had carbs, but here you're more than doubling them!) and I'm skeptical that the weight loss will continue but I'm going to follow her plan and see where I go...she hasn't failed me yet! This program requires a bit of discipline. I packed up a little lunchbox every day with nuts, cheeses, peanut butter and celery and so forth so that on busy days at work I would have the right choice of snacks to hold me over until my next meal...this was a lifesaver! As for today as I move into Phase 2...I had yummy blueberries for the first time in 8 weeks...pure BLISS! Doing this during the summer when fruit is ripe and smells soooo amazing wasn't easy. Any `cravings' I had (and truly I can't even call them that!) were for a handful of fresh blueberries, a sweet strawberry or a slice of watermelon!!!A couple helpful items that got me through Phase 1 and that I will continue to use...Sara Lee Delightful Wheat Bread and La Tortillaria Low Carb Tortillas. One more thought, I know that in this crazy world of dieting that we seem to have it in our heads that we SHOULD lose 2 lbs per week...I had that in my head too! I ended up 2 lbs short of 16 lbs. Big Whoop! I'm proud of myself for this! Besides, she even says you can expect to lose UP TO 13 lbs in Phase 1, so actually, I did better than I thought! If you've tried it all, try this!UPDATE: As I enter Week 13 I've found that while I have not GAINED any weight in this Phase, I have also not lost so much as an ounce since the end of Week 8. I'm still happy with what I've lost but will need to start making adjustments to get that scale moving again!02/2014: After completely going off the program in 2012 and gaining back every pound PLUS 10 and no other plan working...it was time to revisit this AMAZING program! On the second week into the program we lost a beloved family member. While we could have gone totally off the program during this difficult time, we didn't. Did we cheat? Yes. One day each week we have had ONE comfort food meal. I KNOW this is not part of the program but grieving is grieving. I share this information only so you know that despite my cheats, after 4 weeks, I've lost 8 lbs. This plan WORKS! BTW...program now allows 5gms of carbs every 4 hours. It's amazing how once you limit your carb intake, it becomes easier & easier. I rarely even have the 5gms every 4-5 hours anymore & find myself not really missing them at all! AND...I've learned to substitute zucchini noodles ('zoodles') for pasta noodles (get a Spirilizer!), mashed cauliflower for mashed potatoes, riced cauliflower for rice...it's possible not to miss the naughty carbs when you have delicious replacements!!!! Get creative and enjoy your results! :)

I am a NEW person....
I have tried everything including lap band, gastric bypass... with bypass I lost 35lbs and then STOPPED.I then gained 35 lbs within 9 months.I was so DEPRESSED because I thought there was no hope. Then I was getting headaches daily, felt horrible, tired, cranky and finally after going to endocrinologist, he determined I had non-diabetic low blood sugar.EUREKA... at least one condition made sense...I then started watching blood sugar and whenever I tried to 'eat healthy', my blood sugar dropped dangerously low (one point 39 and stuttering and told my triplets next time mommy can't talk or make herself clear, call 911).I kept eating carbs to maintain energy. Kept gaining weight.I came across this book and thought hmmm. this makes sense.Showed it to my GP and he poo pooed it.My mom said.. 'you are your best doctor' and she was right...I prepared a worksheet of her guidlines and created a chart of what I had to do each day because my memory is horrible. And, I was overwhelmed with all the information of phase 1, phase 2, final phase etc..I then realized... focus on phase 1, when you get close to phase 2, reread it and focus on phase 2 and don't worry about phase 3...I took my chart and marked each item off and was religious about staying off the carbs.I copied her 'arrow' page and put copy in purse and copy on cabinets to remind me of basic strategy and what to eat at what phase..I started the plan...I had HORRIBLE headache for 5 days but sure enough, after day 5.. NO headaches, no energy issues etc...WE WENT on VACATION. I did AWESOME till the day we returned. I thought.. one day won't hurt me...In the back of my mind I was thinking... here we go again... start a new 'diet' and do good for short term and now we go back to old habits..I had sugar, bread, etc...So, woke up next day and at end of the day... my ankles were HUGE, woke up with bad headache, reflux taste in mouth, felt crappy.it took 2 weeks to get ankles semi-normal.I looked online trying to find out if I had liver issues, etc... scared me to death.I immediately went back on the plan. I had a headache for 2 days getting rid of the junk in my body.I can now tell you I do not have a problem with being tempted....I look at the 'poor food choice' and think about how swollen my ankles were and how miserable I felt...I miss all the food don't get me wrong. I will admit very rarely but sometimes I do taste a 'non-healthy' food but do not swallow and spit it out. I think.. it's not worth it.The change in my life is that now I have a different outlook in food choices in that ... "is this healthy choice? what is this doing to my body? Do I really want to go through detox again for a cookie? Do I want to feel crappy again?" NO!I also am changing my husband and kids eating habits because we all are 'fluffy' and this might happpen to them too!One suggestion I have is... in the first couple of weeks, don't be hard on yourself if you find yourself eating alot of neutral foods and such (NO CARBS THO)...This time will be the hardest...Focus on NO CARBS and do whatever it takes to stay away for 8 weeks and remember you have the rest of your life to lose the weight. Just be strong during this time. After about 3 weeks, after you have established what you can eat and not eat, reread the phase 1 and then start thinking about portion control, and long-term weight loss. You can do it!

great book but not as effective as it claims but ...
great book but not as effective as it claims but maybe that's just me. I lost 2.5 kilo on this diet which is not a huge amount. That said i have adopted the principles and hopefully it will continue to drop. Worth a read but found some of the recipes difficult, especially on the protein phase but i adjusted and now its fine.

It now sits on the shelve
Two stars is probably unfair because I browsed through and though it far too much work, then dismissed it. Perhaps in the future I may make a serious attempt. It was interesting but not exciting to me.

Disappointing
Recipes interesting but hoped for a section on making carb-free crackers, bread, and other replacements for normally high-carb staples
