Christmas Music from Medieval Europe

I could not wait to listen to this when Christmas came. I put it on my CD player and was taken back to the Medieval times and these Christmas songs were just beautiful. Not just the usual Christmas music we all used to hearing, it was music that was the start of the Christmas music we currently enjoy but at an era that you could imagine hearing people singing. Worth the money.

I'm enjoying this CD in the middle of July. Not typical overplayed Christmas music, but stirring, and contemplative.The one flaw is minor: the first four cuts have to be cranked up in my car CD player. Later pieces play at a more even sound level. Musicianship, voices, and quality of selections are superb. If you like Medieval and Renaissance music I think you'll be delighted.

Fits into my growing collection of old/ancient holiday music very nicely. Takes the taste of yet another version of "Let it Snow" away-I just hate the way you get clobbered over the head with the same old songs everywhere you turn for 6 weeks a year. Music like this lets you get home..close the door..light good Christmas incense and get a warm beverage..and slide this into the player and lock the world outside.

If you like medieval and renaissance music, you will like this CD. The Harry Christophers are among the very best of its choral interpreters.

Lovely music, wish there was another disc.

I'm always on the lookout for The Boar's Head Carol written in the early 1500s and it is well-represented on this CD along with other rarely-heard seasonal recordings that are very enjoyable listening.

This is a perfect Christmas cd, one which will please you for those alone moments, or please everyone for your holiday gatherings. The music is not intrusive and provides just the right touch for Christmas. It's SO much better than all those canned Christmas carols we're all so sick of.

It was sent directly to a musician who enjoys all sorts of music and who has a collection of renaissance music. Splendid is his description.

This is not just for Christmas. This is a choral delight at any time of the year. The Sixteen, under Harry Christopher's direction, continue to deliver the best of polyphonic vocal performances. This is such an output of beauty that the familiar, 'In Dulci Jubilo', produces a different and gorgeous interpretation. 'Riu, riu chiu' moves The Sixteen into a more dynamic mode, immediately followed by Jean Mouton's beautiful and emotive 'Nesciens Mater', culminating in 'Omnes de Saba'. There are not enough superlatives available to describe this wondrous celebration of music.

This is the best cd of christmas music available, along with Anonymous 4 "Wolcum Yule". Both are head and shoulders above the rest, with amazingly pure sound that manages to be ancient, mysterious and beautiful yet still contemporary. Worth every penny!

Perhaps not for everyone I suppose but the serenity and clarity of what 'The Sixteen' normally are about here translates quite excellently within a medieval (and slightly later) Christmastime framework. Curl up in your most comfortable chair with a glass of your favourite wine, for that is how sweet this music will sound to you.

What a fabulous collection of music for Advent and Christmas. I had bought this as a tape many years ago but purchased the CD more recently and noticed the vast improvement in quality of sound. For me, this is the true sound of Christmas rather than some of the drivel that is played at Christmastime in our supermarkets...so here it is, Merry Christmas!
