The leather cuts for the side walls have different widths and lengths, making the laced-up shoes look uneven and although it's almost unnoticeable because of the black color, put lighter colored laces on and you'll see. Also, the tongue was stitched in a way that makes it tilt towards the right, leaving an empty space on the left side of the shoe. One boot had signs of use as the writing on the inner side of the tongue (containing the sizing info) was noticeably worn. There was a big problem, though. In their upscale 1958 version of the lace to toe design, Chippewa used a long strip of leather under each row of eyelets to reinforce them. In this less costly pair, they use one strip for the vamp area. This is then scived and glued to a second strip that reinforces the eyelets under the shaft area. There's a lump where the two strips are glued together. It's over the top of the instep. It presses on the instep when the laces are tightened. It hurts. Using two strips per side instead of one was probably done as a matter of economy in the less expensive boot. The amount of money saved was probably marginal. But for me it made a beautiful pair of boots unwearable.
