The cow is the most productive, efficient creature on earth. She will give you fresh milk, cream, butter, and cheese, build human health and happiness, and even turn a profit for homesteaders and small farmers who seek to offer her bounty to the local market or neighborhood. She will provide rich manure for your garden or land, and will enrich the quality of your life as you benefit from the resources of the natural world. Quite simply, the family that keeps a cow is a healthy family. Originally published in the early 1970s as The Cow Economy and reprinted many times over, Keeping a Family Cow has launched thousands of holistic small-scale dairy farmers and families raising healthy cows in accordance with their true nature. The book offers answers to frequently asked questions like, โShould I get a cow?โ and โHow Much Space do I need?โ in addition to extensive information on: โข The health benefits of untreated milk; โข How to milk a cow effectively and with ease; โข Choosing your dairy breed; โข Drying off your cow; โข Details on calving and breeding; โข The importance of hay quality and how to properly feed your cow; โข Fencing and pasture management; โข Housing, water systems, and other supplies; โข Treating milk fever and other diseases and disorders; โข Making butter, yogurt, and cheese, and, of course . . . โข . . . Everything else the conventional dairy industry doesnโt tell us! Now revised and updated to incorporate new information on the raw milk debate, the conversation about A1 vs. A2 milk, fully grassfed dairies, more practical advice for everyday chores, and updated procedures for cow emergencies. Keeping a Family Cow has not only stood the test of time, it still remains the go-to inspirational manual for raising a family milk cow nearly forty years after its first publication. Joann Grohman has a lifetime of practical experience that has been bound into this one volume and presented in the spirit of fun and learning. Review: Great book - Great book! Very Informative
The book starts with a very thorough and convincing case supporting the consumption of raw milk. The rest of the book goes through every step of owning, breeding, and milking a cow, plus calf raising and troubleshooting illness. It also has a section in the back with information on the anatomy of a cow and the various breeds. Very well-rounded book, and probably something for everyone whether beginner or not. Highly recommend!

I have a small herd of mid-sized Jersey cows and this book just covers everything I need to know to raise happy, healthy animals
I have been looking for just this book! It does what no internet search has been able to do for me, give me reliable, accurate information on raising a home milk cow, and she has a lifetime of experience. I keep this on my desk and reference all the time. I have a small herd of mid-sized Jersey cows and this book just covers everything I need to know to raise happy, healthy animals. The author obviously cares about her animals, and I feel prepared to handle issues from diet to emergencies with her clear and concise writing style. I will probably re-read a few times just as a refresher.

ThisWas a great book it was a little more specifically towards just the Jersey breed. She continually references the Jersey breed and at times I thought it would have been beneficial if she had perhaps use more general references for all breeds or a greater variety of breeds.

Love this book
I bought this book to begin my journey of learning about cows for our homestead. I love the way this book is written, itโs very easy to understand and not boring. Lots of good nuggets of wisdom. I especially appreciated the history about how cows came to be a part of families for centuries and the thorough explanation of the cow industry today (appalling). Very much so would recommend this book to anyone looking for more education on having a family cow. Love this book.

Highly recommended
What a brilliant book and a dose of practical common sense in a world disconnected to where or how our food arrives on our plate. The author makes a good case for keeping a family cow but along the way provides a number of home truths about the modern food industry. If you are thinking about getting a cow and have little experience I would suggest this book is essential. If you are merely interested in the good life and what it might entail it is still a great read. Recommended without reservation!

Loved This Book
I loved this book. It is possibly the best book on the subject of keeping a family cow available, and I have a couple of Kindle books and some paper books on this very subject, as I love cheese and other dairy products, and would love to have the space for my own dairy cow/s when I eventually retire.
