I didn't receive any kind of alert when it was activated, but when I checked (tried to activate it again) in the morning, it said it was already active. About a mile or two after I crossed the border in Ontario, my data on my regular SIM card cut out (I was using GPS and streaming music). I pulled over and swapped out SIM cards. Make sure you have a paper clip or small tool with you if needed to open the compartment, and that you keep your regular SIM card in a safe spot. Once I turned my phone back on, it took a minute to find the carrier, but then I was back up and running with GPS. My Pandora would only play offline stations, so I'm not sure what that was about, but I was mostly concerned with GPS and Messenger, which both worked. I did not try to make texts or calls. When I swapped my old card back in on arriving in Michigan, everything returned to normal.
