will this crack if its cold?

YES IT WILL. It's very thin plastic for the amount of water it holds. I'm an avid gym goer. So I drink about 5 liters of water a day. I've been using these bottles for way to long. In two years I've bought about 6 of them because they're cheap and I get a discount through bodybuilding.com
I'm writing this with a soaked crotch as my 6th one just randomly blew out on me as I was driving. 2.2 liters of cold water now on my frank and beans.

Is the whole bottle BPA free or just the stainless steel cap

If you look in the recycling logo you will see a number or letters. This bottle is BPA #1, which means it is not as safe as you think. Plus, it is also made in China, which may have different regulations in producing their plastics, so I'd be very skeptical about it any type of plastic that's made in China, Taiwan, etc. If you're looking for the most BPA friendly plastic bottle, then look for the recycling symbol that has a #2, #4 or #5. The #7 (as well as a recycling symbol with a "SAN" or "AN"). Although plastics showing the symbol of "SAN" or "AN" are made of stronger, more durable plastics they're not the safest. On the flip side, the #7 can also encompass plastics that may be safer including newer biodegradable, plant-derived plastics made from corn/potato starch or sugar cane, rather than some of the other #7 plastics lumped into the mix, so unless you know the source who's making it and can identify exactly what's used to make it (and research each of those products), then definitely don't use #7. If at all possible using a plastic bottle can pose sum type of risks to you regardless of what type of plastic it is, but with the research for now, if you need to use plastic look for the recycling #2, #4, or #5. If you can help it buy glass bottles or if that's not possible or convenient, then purchase stainless steel (not the knock offs, but real stainless steel) with the codes listed on it as 304 or 18/8. These are the highest grade stainless steel, and although they will cost you more upfront, it's definitely worth the little bit it is to purchase one. It's much healthier and much safer...Just to be fair, I think we all want to get a bargain or deal, but just remember "you get what you pay for", so do your research for yourself.
