This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual understanding of the world around and on techniques for representing that world. Rendering is the next step after drawing to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book shares everything the two experts know about how to render light, shadow and reflective surfaces. This book is divided into two major sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide range of materials utilizing this knowledge. Throughout the book, two icons appear that indicate either “observation” or “action.” This means the page or section is about observing reality or taking action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in creating your own work. Similar to our previous book, How To Draw, this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app. Review: Great book for every level! - Unlike the how to draw book, I think this one is a lot more approachable for beginners all the way to professionals. It covers literally everything about rendering, at least that I can think of. It provides very extensive information and it’s really thorough and mostly concerned with how to depict form, texture, and shadows. I think every serious artists should read this book and I believe it can really push your skills to the next level especially if you pair it with the how to draw book :0 it is a Scott Robertson book though so it definitely has its difficult lessons :,) I hope the pictures give you an idea what it looks like inside Review: The detail goes far deeper than I expected. Worth every penny. - This book is massive. There is so much content that the table of contents is five pages. Small print. Does this mean this is the only book you will ever need on rendering? I haven't finished the book, but I'm going to take wild guess and say 'yes'. I can't be for sure, but I do know this, I will be spending months, if not years perfecting the lessons in this book. Because of that, this will be my last and go-to guide to rendering. In other words, save the time, money, and shelf space, and just get this book. I have been learning so much that my mind is blown. Here's so of my favorite things about the book so far: 1. It has a lot of content for every situation you will find yourself in as an artist. If you draw from photo references, there's a lesson. If you use markers to render, there's a lesson. If you're drawing from life, there's a lesson. This is amazing because it never assumes you will use the same techniques with every medium or every reference. Rendering is different for every situation and I love that they take the time to show examples for each. which is why the book is so long. 2. I don't have to read straight through. I can use it as a reference guide and learn techniques as I need them. As artist we build tools and techniques one after the other. We don't learn everything there is in one sitting. This book is good for building. 3. Reflective or glossy surfaces. Need need need. What isn't my favorite sometimes is how detailed it gets. There are some things that is hard for me to understand. Right now I'm looking at what looks like a math problem. However, I bought this book for that very reason. I want to know the details, so it will take some time.

Great Learning Resource!
Another winner in the growing series from Scott Robertson. If you purchased "How To Draw", you owe it to yourself to add this book to your learning library. Similar in format, "How To Render" is both a hands-on, how-to instructional as well as a knowledge based means for understanding the "why" of the "what" you are doing. Scott gives you a well balanced understanding of the underlying principles that are key to accurately applying the techniques that will bring your line art to full blown, well executed final renderings. The additional video content is superb and compliments the written explanations beautifully. Both works are like having a classroom experience in a book/video format and are fantastic learning resources. Being as such, if you follow the sequential steps and let your knowledge grow progressively through the book and don't try to skim it or pick and choose the information, you will walk away with a rich understanding of the subject matter and be able to apply it across the spectrum of your work and not just the immediate project at hand. If you are looking to take your artwork to a higher level but are at a loss as to where to find the knowledge, you cannot go wrong in purchasing this book or Scott's other work, "How To Draw". Both are excellent resources and are highly recommended!

Essential for Artists/Designers
This book is a must-have for every aspiring artist/designer interested in learning the fundamentals of light, shadow, and reflectivity. Robertson conveys concepts clearly and methodically, enabling me to grasp seemingly complex ideas and apply them in my own drawing and rendering exercises. The instructional videos included in this product can be accessed via the DSP app, which makes doing the exercises more enjoyable. The step-by-step videos are absolutely conducive to learning. I highly recommend this book as it is just as outstanding as the author's other book, "How to Draw", which teaches you to draw objects and environments from your own imagination using perspective and the draw-through method. The first book also comes with instructional videos that can be accessed through the DSP app. For the price, this book is such a great value as it packs in a LOT of essential information.

The best book out there for learning how to render your line drawings
I picked up this book after reading the first book in the series: I find this book is an excellent continuation on the first. The first sets up your fundamentals and this book builds on that solid foundation with skills that will serve you if you want to take a fundamentally high quality line drawing to the next level by accurately rendering it. This book is printed on the same high quality thick paper that the first book was printed on. Also, I find the content to be as much if not more than the first book. Pros: *Excellent explanation of rendering techniques *Great examples *Printed on very high quality paper Cons: *None Additional Considerations: If you have not read the first book in this series I feel like it would be useful to anyone--even the experienced. I would get it and go through it before going through this book: How to Draw: drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination Overall: 5/5 stars (>=.5 rounds up, <.5 rounds down) => 5 stars If you have any further questions regarding the product in my review please leave a comment below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

... To Draw left off and is one of the best art book I have read
This is a book that builds up on where How To Draw left off and is one of the best art book I have read. The are plenty of exercises in the book and quiet a bit of theory is covered as well. The is also plenty of extra material to be found on the book's website such as videos to accompany the exercises in the book and Photoshop PSD files for some of the images in the book that you can examine to get an idea of how some of the pictures where put together. To take full adventure of what this book has to offer you really have to make use of the website material. This is an intermediate book that is aimed at artists that have a good understanding of perspective drawing. If you are a bit shaky on your perspective drawing then I would recommend that you first read the first book in the series How To Draw.

Great book, Awful shipping
One of the most wonderful and informative books I’ve ever picked up. However, as for shipping. It came fully bent, some of the pages were even folded and it was not packaged properly. This isn’t how you treat books much less ship them!! Disappointed to have such an amazing book warped and bent like this.

A quintessential foundation for design
In the current landscape of easy-to-use 3D rendering software, it is easy to overlook the foundations of what make a great-looking and realistic image. I have been doing 3D animation and rendering for close to 15 years and I can honestly say that this book is essential for anyone interested in that field. Not because it has tips and tricks for how to press the right buttons, but instead gives you a practical understanding that transcends software. Scott does rendering in photoshop, yet can achieve results that I have seen people struggle over in 3D packages. All because he understands the fundamentals. The video content is fantastic bonus and for anyone interested in what that is like, check out Scott's youtube channel which is also an equally fantastic resource. https://www.youtube.com/user/scottrobertsondesign For those of you who need to improve your drawing first, there is no real drawing in this book. Instead, check out Scott's How to Draw book, which is equally good.

This book is useful, but not for beginners.
This book is useful for people learning to draw professionally. It can be a supplementary material. But for beginners or for self-study it may be too heavy for understanding.
