I start with high and when coffee gets down to middle cup switch to the lower setting which is still quite heated. Only thing is for it to work most efficiently you will need to use a flat bottom cup with no rim. I purchased a nice glass one on Amazon. If I'm going to drink coffee more quickly I still use a cup with a rim because I like my other cups too!
