Good, quiet portable hard drive
After researching portable hard drives, I went with the Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 250 GB, Camo: Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 250 GB, Camo It was delivered exactly when Amazon said it would be (amazing how accurately I could track it's location during delivery).Setup of the drive is very simple (the little instruction book comes in multiple languages, although I only needed english). There's really nothing to do except plug it in. I use it on Windows PC's. It is preformatted out of the box as NTFS.It comes with the 2 headed USB cable, which is 2 ft. long. The drive itself is 5.25x3.5 inches and comes with the X shaped rubber sling which fits snugly on the drive and is padded a little extra at the corners. The finish on the drive itself is a flat finish, although the pictures on the Amazon and Iomega sites make it appear as if it has a glossy or shiny finish. This is very minor, as camouflaged objects shouldn't shine in order to avoid detection by the enemy! If the drive is making any noise while spinning, I can't hear it. There's a small green indicator light on one end of the drive that flickers when the drive is active (i.e. copying files or making a folder on it).I have not needed to use the second USB plug for additional power. My 3 PC's have recognized the drive the first time I plugged it in to them (2 XP and one Vista), but it's good the cable has the extra plug. I don't notice any difference in performance when using the extra plug.I copied approximately 35gb from my Vista machine to it in approximately 5 minutes. The speed is satisfactory for me.I would happily by another of these drives, assuming the price doesn't go up by more than $10.00.

Awesome drive, must buy!
Awesome product. I was previously using a WD My Book World Edition. I bought this after I saw video on popular mechanics about it being dropped from 15 feet and run over by a Suburban and it still ran perfectly. I connected it last night and was blown away by the speed! I find it pretty small, and with the rubber grips on it makes it stable on a desktop. I plugged it (using only the USB cable, not even plugging in the extra power USB - it has a two-headed cable but says to only use the power usb cable if your port doesn't provide enough power, it also has a spot on the drive for plugging in an AC adapter, but doesn't come with it, and frankly I found you don't need it and this way it's less clutter and cables around) and VOILA there was the drive. It transfered about 4gb of photos in about five minutes. Mind you, the WD drive I've been using took about five hours to transfer those very same files! Someone else might find that speed slow, but even when I transferred those same files (yes, I've been transferring my same picture files to different storage options trying to find one I liked) from my pc to a dvd disc it took almost an hour. I'm not going to recreate the abuse testing, but it seems pretty rugged and well made. I don't like the camo color but since popular mechanics also tested a red iomega ego and it didn't fare as well I went with the camo. I will definitely be buying a 1tb drive from iomega as well for the space, since I want to put my cd collection on it. One caveat, when I went to eject the drive when I was done with it, it didn't want to stop and be ejected. But when I shut down the computer, it turned off so no biggie. I definitely recommend this drive!

Great backup disk
Bought it about a month ago. I ordered the silver version. It is a fantastic ergonomic design. Thin and stable on table. The disk came with a USB cable with 2 heads that is completely unnecessary. The 2 heads cable is designed for very slow computers, it does not make any difference in speed in newly built laptops. One head is sufficient. The disk came with no loaded software. Need to download it from the website. Although it says it is free to have the backup software, after download the program asks for a license key. I did not contact customer service for this issue who might have advised what to do. Instead I realized my Windows 7 has a very good backup utility that backs up all files and generate start up disk and a system backup image in case of a crash or virus infection. You can also set up scheduled backups. Did all backups including system image in about 30-40 min. With the system image this took about 100 GB on the external disk. Next backups of the same computer will take less time to complete, about 15-20 min. Higher speed disks such as 7200 rpm are not necessary in my opinion unless you are kind of a person who backups load of stuff every while. A larger size disk would have been useful especially for those who have load of stuff to back up. So far this is definitely good size external backup disk from a trusted company. I highly recommend it.
