Cengage Advantage Books: Understanding Arguments, Concise Edition

You will turn into someone who is a fierce, calculated arguer that pierces through people's premises like a laser beam. If you take this alongside the Coursera course offered by the author himself, dump extra time into the book and use the answers in the Coursera course to correct your answers to problems in the workbook you will have to learn how to back down from an argument by not talking at all. This is because you'll become so good that you will never back down and will always see through the downfall of other people's reasoning. Being smart isn't all about having a high IQ, but knowing how to think and reason; this book teaches just that. Be careful positing view points that can be argued, because you may lose friends when you chew them to the bone. In the end, is the friendship worth being right in your argument? Your choice. Today, I have no friends. This comment is not designed as a joke and is not satirical, for I am telling you the truth.

This book supports an online course I am taking. It is not required for the course bit it is a good reference for the course and provides addition detail.

I bought this book to accompany Dr. Sinott-Armstrong's Coursera Courses on Arguments (there are four of them and I'm taking the first). I'm happy with the material in this first course and his presentation of it. So happy, in fact, that I decided to order the book.I'm VERY UNHAPPY that the _purchased_ book (not rented) appears to be useless for the Kindle. I can't even download it to the device - that option is not available. This is not a technical problem, it appears to be some kind of copy protection "scheme" that limits me to reading it on the PC!If I wanted to carry my laptop (or worse) desktop with me everywhere I go, then I've have ordered the physical book.AMAZON: IF YOU OFFER A KINDLE BOOK...make [darn] sure you can use it on a kindle or at the bare minimum WARN USERS. If does affect my buying decision.

Causes you to give thought to others arguments. Which is sorely missing these days.

I bought this for my wife's online classes, and now I keep losing arguments. Dammit.

The book is written well, with humorous examples, and it is a perfect companion to the Coursera MOOC "Think again: how to reason and argue". It also contains a slew of exercises which help you check and validate your understanding. Those who follow the course will have the correction to the book exercises :)
