will this work on LG um6950dub

YES! The LG um6950dub provides digital audio output(optical) which is the input to the Mosou. The Mosou converts the optical audio to standard R/L channel stereo audio. I use it to enable me to use headphones for TV. It's a nuisance that newer TV's don't provide the Stereo output jacks.

Will this connect an optical audio cable from a sony a80j tv to a yamaha stereo receiver with only rca r/l input connections?

Yes, this unit uses both digital type for an input (optical & coax) and L&R analog outputs. One note on this setup Since your stereo is connected analog to this device and your TV is outputting a digital signal, you may have to change the TV audio out to optical and stereo out as this unit will not process dolby digital or surround properly.
