Proctor-Silex Cool Touch 4-Slice Toaster

I bought this because Consumer Reports recommended it.Two years ago, my long time toaster quite on me. Without much thought I bought a relative cheap toaster. I didn't care about toasting bagels, muffins just slices of bread.Well, it did not toast evenly. So I bought another....Same dang thing. How hard can that be to toast a single slice of bread?I think the problem is, today's toasters try to do too much, muffins, bagels, tarts or whatever.Well guess what....this toaster actually toasted my slice of bread evenly.....Wa Hooo....:)I Would have given this 5 stars, but for 2 things.First, Consumer Reports said this was listed at $16.99. Now I can't say for sure but it seems they took advantage of that very positive review, and increased the price considerably. At this time $28.95.Second con...Since the outer body is plastic, its light weight. When you push down on the toast lever, it can up end the toaster. Not enough weight to stay planted. This is only a minor issue. Just hold on to the main body, or push gently.OK....yes they jacked up the price, but at even at a $28.95 price, it was worth it. If you just want evenly toasted slices of bread, get this one. Maybe there are others out there, but it will be a crap shoot. Buy this one and be sure.

I'm surprised how well this little toaster works.It was recommended by a well known consumer magazine. I agree.Despite it's small size, it fits bagels and large slices just fine.It toasts evenly, even when doing continual slices.It's also quicker and quieter than my last toaster.Now that I think of it, it's quieter than ALL the other toasters I've known. (Never paid attention to the SOUND of a toaster before)I notice that some other reviewers mention short slices of bread getting caught. I haven't had this happen.The lever is made to be pushed UP to help retrieve short slices and that has worked fine for me.Quick, even, light (and quiet), excellent!

The toast or muffin does not pop all the way up when done. You have to lift up the levers to raise the toasted item above the opening, and sometimes the item slips under the wire and will not come up. You have to unplug the toaster and dig it out.UPDATE: This toaster does not even perform the most basic function well: toasting the bread evenly. Dark on top, barely toasted on the bottom. It is the worst toaster I have ever owned and the worst purchase I have ever made on Amazon.

This is a nice looking and sturdy toaster. Several nice features. Make sure you read the booklet before using it the first time as there are different scenarios for different types of bread, using refrigerated bread vs. room temperature bread, etc. The only problem I had was the first time I made toast. It suggested for medium toast to set temperature knob between 3-5 so I set it on 4 and it burned all 4 slices. I moved it down to 2 for the next slices and it came out perfectly. It was also nice to get 4 slices toasted in the same amount of time that it took me to do 2 slices before. I would recommend this product.the

This toaster is not heavy duty or fancy but it works. The thing I struggle with is that the bread does not pop up like the picture, it stays low as the opening of the toaster, and to grab the toast I burn my fingers.It is not a "cool touch" material on the outside where the toast comes out. Other than that, it toasts the bread well but to burn your fingers is not fun.This toaster is good looking but NOT a good value if you burn your fingers or a child burns theirs.I am looking for a new toaster!

I hate this toaster. It does the toasting fine, settings from barely warmed to blackened just like any other toaster. If you look at the picture, notice the silver colored trim plate on the top. This has a lip around each slot that your toast will catch on when popping up which prevents it from popping up probably a third of the time. If you buy this, you best purchase toast tongs  HIC Harold Import Co. 4042 Natural Bamboo Toast Tongs, 12"  to go with it.

My toaster oven died and I decided to go with just a toaster to save space. I have the same brand similar model in a vacation home (matte surface instead of shiny) and its worked well for the most part over the past three years. I've had this one for about a week now and so far so good. The toasting is pretty much uniform, maybe a tiny bit lighter on one side. The opening is fairly wide but if you have real bagels you'll need to make sure you slice them right in the middle to still fit without smooshing first. So as long as it doesn't up and die in the next year or two I'd say a pretty good purchase and only 16 bucks. Oh and for those interested: its fairly fast to toast at just a notch below #4 and the sides stay cool (the metal top does get hot.. duh!)

This toaster looked nice and actually toasted nicely. However, it wasn't for us as we use rye or pumpernickel bread and the slots are not long enough to take the bread. If we put the bread on it's end, we have to toast half and then turn it over to toast the other half.I should have realized that from the picture. :(

This toaster is ok, but like other reviewers mention, the toast gets stuck. This wouldn't be a big deal, but it also doesn't toast very evenly. Plus one set/side toasts darker than the other set. Also the crumb trays are very small (one for each side) and you can't open the bottom up to get all the crumbs - they get caught outside the trays and are hard to get out.

Pretty solid toaster. My only issue with this is that when the timer settings are exactly the same for the right and left side, the left side toasts for 5-6 seconds longer. A small issue but it sort of bothers me

The cool touch sides are a great feature, but what I didn't know is that this toaster has built in "wire grabbers" that grab the bread or bagel inside and hold them in the centre of the toasting slot so they never touch the elements ! Love that feature !

Bought this for my daughter and her husband for Christmas. Their house burned down in June 2013 and she needs everything all over again. Proctor-silex is a great mfg so this was on her wish list for Xmas. She really loves it.
