A truly fabulous "fairy tale" for older young people...and younger old people as well!
What is better to have, a mechanical metallic fish or a magical wooden horse? This seemingly improbable question is delved into in this wondrous, many-layered story from Idries Shah's fantastical cabinet of world tales. Yes, so-called magical things happen in this story, but these weird events actually speak to aspects and challenges of being human in a way that allows important life lessons to be absorbed without these being "taught." This functionality is what makes The Magic Horse a true "teaching story"--there is no heavy "moral" at the end, rather the valuable nutrients are encountered throughout. Concepts such as "heart's desire," "usefulness," "practical" versus "impractical," "pragmatist" versus "dreamer," and more are layered in, making this a very rich and tasty story-cake indeed! Can a man actually turn into a beast with terrible goat-horns and hairy taloned hands, as happens to the hero Tambal at one point? Well, no, of course not, but...well, yes it actually happens all the time, doesn't it? Tambal has something that enables him to escape this horrid fate, though. Read this story aloud and all will begin to get a sense of what that very important "something" is. (English/Urdu edition)
