Hand Knits by Machine: The Ultimate Guide for Hand and Machine Knitters

Book looks very interesting and I probably will get good use out of it. I thought it was about circular machines, my mistake.

This book is great for the novice/just learning knitter. There seems to be an attempt to fill in some of the gaps left by knitting machine manuals. To use the book the knitter needs to know how to use their transfer tools. If you have more knitting machine knowledge/experience and you want to brush up on entrelac or learn the method of doing it presented here the instructions are clear, there are pics and diagrams. If you are an experienced knitter and want to learn how to make some shaped knitted pieces as on the cover of the book then the last chapter of the book is for you. There is also a chapter on mosiac knitting if you are interested.

Susan Guagliumi is my favorite knitting machine writer. Clear, concise and outside-of-the-box thinking along with her cheerful, can-do nature make her a star. To continue to write for machine knitting with, sadly, a niche audience, makes her extra special. This book is a particular joy for bridging the gap between hand knitters and machine knitters. Too many hand knitters eschew machine knitting and, frankly, look down their noses. I am a lifelong hand knitter. You hand knitters have no idea with you're missing! It's somewhat apples and oranges, but it is absolutely, positively, not "cheating", the word that keeps being tossed in machine knitters' faces. Who would say a car cheats a horse or a sewing machine cheats hand-sewing?Let this book be loved for all it offers we machine knitters and bridge a gap to entice hand knitters. Bought one, and immediately bought two more for gifts. Thank you, Susan!

This book is a must have for all machine knitters, beginners to veterans! It is well crafted from the beautiful and clear illustrations to Susan's easy to understand and concise explanations.It is divided into two parts: machine basics and hand knitted techniques adapted for the machine. However, don't be fooled into thinking that the machine basics are just the usual beginner instructions. It is loaded with tips and information it would take a life time of MK to figure out and it is all here in one reference.And the chapter on modular knitting was amazing. I sat down and read it cover to cover.

I have been combining hand knitting and machine knitting for well over twenty years, and this book proves that there is still more to learn! Excellently written, with concepts explained well, this is a valuable, and I think, necessary addition to any machine knitter's library. Susan Guagliumi takes the time to explain methods that are just not explained anywhere else, and also takes the time to explain why certain techniques just won't work very efficiently on a knitting machine. Take Susan's classes, buy her books!!! There is no one who knows machine knitting better than she does!

Very detailed easy to understand instructions. I have all her books and will get any book she makes. A must for all machine knitters.

This book is a wealth of information with great pictures and precise explanations. It helps hand knitters understand how to convert hand knitting into machine knitting, and it helps machine knitters understand exactly how our machines work. Beautifully done, and the references to current hand-knit patterns that translate easily to machine knitting is very helpful.

I admire the way Susan presents information. This is a great book, meeting and exceeding my expectation.The print size is a bit small and the book had half of one paragraph omitted but the missing text is available on the authors web site.It is a very attractive book with fresh clear pictures, vivid colors and excellent diagrams. Part Two (chapters 7-10) will make it a 'go to' resource for me in these areas of work.

The description for this book is all wrong. It leads you to believe that it is about converting hand knit patterns to machine knit and it is not really. It is so much more than that.I have been knitting for well over 40 years but not for the last 5 years due to time etc. I was given a knitting machine and introduced to the joy of knitting again but despite the shared name of 'knitting' hand and machine knitting are quite different really. So it was a whole new learning curve for me. I was lucky enough to be given some ancient but very informative books etc from the 80s and 90s and found quite a few good tips on Ytube. I bought this book because it is hard to come by decent patterns for the knitting machine and hoped to change some standard patterns to use on it.WOW! well, I really wished I had bought this book a few months ago. It starts by introducing you to the knitting machine, how it knits etc and the basics. Covers casting on, casting off, increasing and decreasing, finishing, lace, tuck stitch, using weights effectively, concept of 'Every Other Needle' (EON) for using standard gauge machine as a chunky etc. and a fantastic chapter on her own method of Entrelac design.And if you were wondering, there IS a small chapter on how to calculate shaping for converting hand knit patterns for use on the machine. a few pages on a formula for working with lengths versus increase stitches or decreases etc in order to end up with a garment that fits how it would if you had knitted it by hand.So now you will understand why the title of this book is all wrong and if it were retitled to something like "Learning to machine knit from scratch and adapting techniques for hand knit patterns on the machine" (ok long winded but you get the idea) I would have bought it months ago and not waited until I had learned the basics elsewhere and was ready for actually creating proper garments on it.

It is well written with photos, showing the techniques needed to make different stitch types in the machine.However, for the price of the book I was hoping for some practice KAL patterns, or some basic knit patterns to get me started.

As a novice returner to machine knitting I find Susan Guagliumi's books very good. Great illustrations (double click on them when using a tablet to read the kindle one) and comprehensive explanations and instructions. So glad I bought this and another one.

Great book so much useful information. As I have recently taken up machine knitting again after a long absence this book is a mine of useful information. Very fast delivery also.

A very well written book explaining the reasons why things are done. I’m still working my way through it but I’m finding out loads already.
