Love this inflator, but it inflates very, very slowly. it took 5 minutes to add 10 psi to a car tire. is this normal?

That is definitely not normal. I am on my fourth one and I use and abuse these day in and day out in my auto repair shop and I purchase these for all of my tire technicians to. I have never had one yet be inaccurate or slow to fill.

how long is the hose?

The hose prior to attaching any accessory is 18"...not quite sure where some of these other numbers are coming from?

I have a small electric compressor with a 1/4 inch female threaded output, how can I attach it to this gauge??

An ordinary male/female coupler.

Can it check pressure by itself or do I have to be hook up to compress air?

Yes - you can check pressure without being connected to an air compressor. Use it like you would any other tire pressure gauge. BONUS TIP, you can deflate tire fast when you squeeze down on the trigger when not connected to air compressor. However, be careful because you may blow past your desire tire pressure. So make sure to have a compressor near by.
