Save your money and buy marine salt.
I dropped this product down to one star after receiving an email response from seachem. Even after receiving "clarification" everything I mentioned below is still applicable. Scroll down to the bottom of my review for a brief summary of their email. This product sort of works but there are few things you should know before buying this "Brackish Salt"1. Per gram, this product is considerably more expensive than marine salt. It is almost criminal how expensive this stuff is. Will using this over marine salt net you 10x better results? Absolutely not. At the current price, this product is roughly $0.02 per gram.2. A 15lb bag of marine salt currently costs roughly $11 which puts it at a penny for 10 grams. That $11 bag costs me $0.08 (3oz) to treat 5 gallons of untreated RO/Di water. This brings the salinity of the water up to approximately 1.010 SG. After going through bottles of "brackish salt", I still haven't the slightest clue how to achieve the same result since, I didn't take a moment to ask my local fish store where exactly my first came from. Is it an estuary fish? Did the fish come from Sri Lanka, Cambodia, or is it a Scat? Makes a huge difference as per the instructions.3. This stuff does not mix into water as easily as marine salt does. Marine salt is generally really fine and dissolves fast. When you open a bottle of this stuff, the first thing you'll notice is how coarse it is. Honestly, this stuff looks like a cross between cooking salt and the salt you use for your driveway or sidewalk during the winter time.4. Buy a hydrometer or high quality refractometer. Don't just trust the instructions.******UPDATE: 12/28/2020******I sent Seachem an email asking for some clarification on the usage of their product. I've been using their products for years, so I was considering the possibility of user error. Needless to say, the email response did little to clarify anything at all. If anything, it demonstrated that the product is a money grab made to exploit uneducated individuals who know little about the topic of brackish aquariums.Regarding target salinity levels:-Seachem: "From our research and testing, we actually found that you can maintain all of those Brackish Environments at a lower level when using our salt mix and still have extremely healthy fish and plants."On the topic of my success with maintaining a high tech planted, blackwater, and brackish aquarium:-Seachem: "Furthermore, it is very surprising that you are able to keep your plants thriving when using the Instant Ocean. From our research and testing, we found that plants do not thrive in high chloride conditions and do result in burnt leaves and stems, as well as, overall melting. Instant Ocean contains ~70% chloride, which is extremely high for keeping plants."My public response:Brackish water in nature is an environment where saltwater and freshwater have mixed. Saltwater is in fact comprised of mainly sodium and chloride with varying macro and micro nutrients which are regionally dependent. If you took a trip to a few brackish estuaries you will not only find varying specific gravities, you will find thriving plants and fish of varies types. Some of the plants you'll find are the mangrove, various ferns, and Vallisneria. In conclusion, most widely accepted literature and experts in the field would agree that most "brackish fish" prefer and thrive in an average salinity of 1.005. Their claim that ideal brackish conditions can be achieved at lower levels of salinity exploit the flexibility of euryhaline fish in order to charge you (the customer) more money for a subpar product.
