Q: Do you know if this will fit a unit that was manufactured in 2003?

My Recon was manufactured in 2003 and it fits. It's a little tight, but you will be able to lock it in. Rechargeable batteries don't work very well. The voltage drops off to quickly. Regular AA's are better. I recommend using the lithium batteries. They maintain a higher voltage longer and will last you through the day. I found that if I leave the batteries in the unit overnight, they will drain down significantly, so I remove them when I'm not using the recon.

Q: Does this unit have a com port (DB9) connect on the back like the standard battery pack?

yes Marc, it's identical except there is no power port...has the 9 pin and the usb-ish port.
