Cotton is soft and strong. I've had these for several years and I think I've tossed maybe one or two pairs for holes. I used them every day and I have bought them in different heights. Over time, the black starts fading, but these do last. I had no shrinkage at all, despite countless washes. I use a commercial washer and dryer, so these get a beating. Our building dryer gets HOT. They're warm in colder months. I wouldnt wear these in the summer, because they're too thick. They fit well and stay up. I fold mine over. The fit is good (I wear a size 8 shoe). I wouldn't say these are "cushioned", but they're not thin.
