Good Primer for Consultants
Fifteen years ago, I read this book and its values resonated with me very strongly. It articulated and organized my thoughts about values, quality of life, life in balance, and other subtle but important personal issues. Fifteen years later, I still recommend the book to people who want to get started in consulting. To people who are seeking jobs, I recommend the last two chapters of An Indian in Cowboy Country: Stories from an Immigrant's Life .

Awesome / Professional
For any one who is in or wants to enter the consulting business. Exemplifies many of the unknown elements of business. You can't just read it once, It has to be re-read and re-read. Insightful, thought provoking and inspiring. Of special note is the chapter on the "Dark side of consulting". Blew me away, especially when the concept finally clicked.

A Consultant Value system
The Consultant's Calling: Bringing Who You Are to What You Do, New and Revised This is an excellent book to give a consultant grounding in values other than busyness. It explores what a consultant's personal aims and values bring to his or her practice. And notes how consulting is a partnership between consultant and client. Wish I had discovered it years ago.

Great book for those thinking of consulting
Geoff's book is a great tool to remind us that humans are the "tool" in consulting. As such, the better we know ourselves, the more our work can align with our values. This book is a great read for those looking to find the meaning behind consulting.

Best one I've read on consultancy
I'm doing an MA in consultancy and this is the perfect antidote to dry, dull books in which consultants are painted as robots obsessed with modes, models and processes. This is a human book about humans doing consulting for other humans. It addresses all the stuff that really matters - like 'loving' your client (yes, really); how to add value just by being yourself; how to make sure you actually enjoy what you do; addressing your work/life balance; how to charge and when not to; why it matters to laugh with your clients; and much, much more. Reading this doesn't set out to tell you what to do to be a good consultant, but you certainly go away knowing the answers. Can't recommend it enough. A light and easy read, unpretentious, but full of vital information and a seriously good key for unlocking success in consulting.
