The Poe Clan Vol. 1

Tremendous, haunting
I really do regret putting off reading The Poe Clan for as long as I have. This is my introductory work to Hagio Moto though I am a lover of Showa-era shoujo manga, and much like The Rose of Versailles, this is an exemplary work of its genre. The page layouts alone are to die for - and the lyrical prose and non-linear structure of the story elevate it beyond great comics into great literature, in my humble opinion. Thought-provoking, romantic, tense, at times almost horrifying; this is a massive tome but a real page turner that didn't take long for me to finish. No, it won't be for everyone, but if you're allured by the artwork and the premise it belongs on your bookshelf. Very eager for part 2.

So this is what Chikaru and the Costume Club saw in this classic series
One of my favorite titles is Strawberry Panic, a multi-character drama about love and intrigue between the students at three exclusive all-girls schools. I first discovered it in its manga format and then got the light novel version as the manga only went up to about a third of the saga. If I can put in a good word for Strawberry Panic in one of my other reviews, I will (like now for example). In the light novel, there is a chapter in which Chikaru and the members of her Costume Club dress up like vampires, playing Poe's Clan. The translation notes pointed out Poe's Clan was a 1970's manga about a vampire family. A few days ago, browsing on Amazon, I came across The Poe Clan. Translation variation aside, I realized this was the same book. The cost was a tad hefty, but there was that Strawberry Panic connection. I must say that it is a very good story and well illustrated. There are the youthful vampires Edgar and Marybelle, who will never age and their stepparents find it necessary to move every few years so humans don't get suspicious. They have encounters with a number of people over the decades, most notably a boy named Alan, who they pull into their existence. The longest part of the volume has Edgar and Alan at a German boys school and that story made me understand what Chikaru and her friends would have liked about this series. The Poe Clan is a fine vintage manga well worth reading and I will look forward to its second volume.

Beautiful and thought provoking
This manga is an amazing piece of art and almost like a combination of literature and movies at their best. Both the stories and visuals are beautiful and thought provoking and show us the deepest feelings and emotions we may be able to experience.

Great copy, could use better wrapping
What an excellent copy! The hard-cover, large-print format showcases the beautiful and delicate arts of Hagio Moto in all their glory. Smooth translation. However, this is an international delivery so the seller should have wrapped it more carefully. As you can see from the pictures, a corner of the cover is dented when I received it.

A very old narrative style
I'm giving this manga 3 stars, but I absolutely hated it. It took me a year to read. The second chapter was absolutely the worst of them. This is because the stories, though linked somewhat, were mostly episodic. So there were lots of characters that didn't return every chapter. It seemed to dwadle with the plot and move so fast at the same time. The intial chapters take the narrative form you'll see in really old novels like wuthering heights. That is to say the main characters aren't initially introduced , but are slowly drawn out as the chapters go on. I was sooooo boreedddd. Frequently the panels were very difficult to follow, because they were both busy and sloppy.Edgar being obsessed with his sister was just obnoxious. Of all the series I've read by moto haigo I liked this one the least and I would not get the 2nd volume if they ever do release it.None of the characters were worth caring about. I'm genuinely confused why everyone has been so positive here lol

Surprised Not in a good way..
I was really looking forward to receiving this book! The size of it surprised me it's bloody hugeeeeeeee o.AO . But I noticed there was like some tape on the bind? I took it off but then saw a blue blob of ink? On the back , dust in the top. The corners a bit squished as well as on one side of the book but the part that done it for me was the back of the book. The reason why I ordered a replacement to see hopefully if I can get a better one.. the back was completely and I mean completely scratched up??!! Like as if someone had purposely scratched it using some key or knife? I've ordered many books from Amazon and this is the first time I've experienced something like that. Anywhooooo my replacement will be coming tonight! So lets hope that that one will do it justice. Because damn it's a bloody gorgeous book. Honestly if this one turns out like this one? I'm just going to ask for a refund and order it on Blackwell.

Gorgeously Gothic
Moto Hagio’s collection of stories about the Poe Clan is so intricately weaved I find myself magically transported to her fictitious world of Vampirnellas in 18th/19th century Europe. I easily devoured the nearly-500page anthology and eagerly await its conclusion. A mix of baroque/gothic manga-art styles and tragic romance storytelling with a twinge of horror (there is something for everyone). Often compared to the movie “Interview with a Vampire” but predated it but by at least 20years. I love with that each chapter is a story from a different time period to exemplify to the reader that time is meaningless to the eternal - genius storytelling. Not only is the story wonderfully engaging, the book is also beautifully bound with delightfully indented font on the cover. Fantagraphics made wonderful decisions with the delicious cover art - I cannot wait to see how volume 2 turns out. I’m hooked. A must buy for classic and vintage shojo art fans. Support this publication! It is worth it, and show publishers we are hungry for more vintage shojo.

Note to Australian buyers
This is NOT a review of "The Poe Clan" itself, but a note of warning to buyers resident in Australia.I bought a new copy, shipped from the US via several carriers in Australia. I opened the (battered) shipping box to find Fantagraphics' large, heavy, handsome edition tossed in together with a few pockets of bubble-pak. And - who would have guessed?! - all cover corners were visibly bumped, the spine ditto and covers no longer fitting as they should. Not bad enough to go to the expense of returning, but enough to make me explore alternatives in future.
