A very good biography even if it’s a little far fetched
I’ve read some pretty horrific books about abduction and abuse such as the Cleveland kidnappings, the Jaycee Duggar story as well as the Elizabeth smart story but none of those were as gruesome and disturbing as this story. It’s suppose to be a true account. But as I was reading it a found a few dents in the story. In the beginning it says that dates and times were changed. But it mentions that she was kidnapped in 1987. But there’s a part where she says she didn’t have a cellular phone after she ran away from her dad at 12 years old. If it’s really 1987 then there would be no such thing as cellular phones then. I also find it bizarre that nobody reported her missing. And that Malik probably told Val that Anna was with him. Or Val would of contacted authorities. I also find it bizarre that when she would go to the hospital to treat an injury she used her real name and would use Malik’s address. Also the money from the courts was sent to Anna with Malik’s address that she used at the hospital. Sometimes she would use her Muslim name yasmeen at the hospital. And I’m wondering how she was able to sign the birth certificate for her babies and what name she used for her signature. Wouldn’t the hospital find no record of a yasmeen ? It mentions the hospital referring to her as yasmeen Aziza which is Malik’s last name. Hospitals demand social security numbers and drivers license and medical insurance cards. So I find that odd she could get by under the false alias especially giving birth at a hospital. And yet on other occasions she would use her real name Anna at the hospital which is how the courts were able to send her the money. The family also sounds extremely disfunctional and I have no idea why Malik’s mother would go along with the kidnapping of Anna knowing there are children in the house that went to school and could blabb to their friends and teachers about a girl locked in a room upstairs that never comes out. It seems Malik was using anna’s Body to make money from her. He kept wanting her pregnant just to sale the babies and make a profit. When she couldn’t get pregnant he had her have a surgery so she could reproduce not because he wanted children of his own but to sale them for money. I find it odd that Anna wanted to have his babies and seemed happy to raise a baby in that environment. She didn’t seem at all worried about the babies being physically abused or for them to see to grow up and see her abused and beaten, raped and locked in a room. Did she really want her child locked up with her like a caged animal? And subjected to the same treatment. I would think after so much injury to her vagina she would of had a serious prolapse or died from a bacterial infection. 13 years is a long time to be raped and beaten everyday. I would think after that long Malik would of lost interest in her sexually or would of been bored after beating her up everyday for 13 years. And either killed her or thrown her out. Or sent her to live with another pimp. He couldn’t of really made too much of a profit of of her with so many sexual health issues. There also would of been studs circulating through the house from all the men she had to sleep with. And I’m sure some of those babies weren’t Malik’s but he didn’t seem to care as long as he got money for them. I find this story hard to believe in this day and age. Even with the Muslim culture that Malik tried to hide Anna behind. I don’t see how no hospital staff and police raid didn’t anyone to notice something out of the ordinary. It was obvious that Anna was white and not a Pakistan girl and had bruises and cuts and scars and acted fearful . wouldn't the hospital staff and cops wonder what this girl was doing with these people and why they were speaking for her? If this really happened it’s a crazy story.

The hardest book I’ve read
Jesus Christ. If you like morbid stuff you will love this but if your biggest fear is getting kidnapped and tortured, this is not really for you

Gut-Wrenching Read
I first wish to commend Anna Ruston for her bravery in sharing her story of the years stolen from her and the brutality experienced! I read that the author doesn't want empathy and dislikes when others write saying they understand, calling her brave etc. She is VERY matter of fact about it and that is certainly one way some people cope but in my educated opinion and personal experience, it is not usually the best way -- at least, not at first. Sexual assault, abuse, and sexual slavery exists in secrecy and silence by it's very nature. Perpetrators of sexual assault, deviance etc., COUNT on this! It is what allows them to continue (along with their obvious sick compulsions that drive them) and allows the victim count to grow. By this, I in NO WAY wish to imply that Anna was at fault however! I just feel that talking about the traumatic experience reduces the fear as well as the perpetrator's power but more importantly, it leads to healing! The book itself. I feel it will definitely capture one's attention and hold it! But like others have said, it is so brutal what was done to this young girl that I had to take breaks in my reading. The level of depravity and inhumanity Malik and some of the men in his family showed is beyond appalling, it is EVIL. Predictably, due to their culture, the women in the family either turned their head or added insult to injury. There were few exceptions. It is well written, easy to understand in terms of narrative, characters, who is speaking and general flow of the story. Due to the location and nationality of the author and those involved, there are occasional words I either had to look up or imply meaning such as the names of certain foods and the word "slag." This didn't take away from the story at all. Aside from the obvious (kidnapping, brutal sexual assaults and physical abuse etc), I have to say that one other part was very difficult for me and I wish with all my heart that Anna had chosen differently because she SAW firsthand what the men in that family are capable of and that is, when she was asked to sign over the rights to her children (born during her captivity as a result of the rapes) to Malik, I wish she had said NO! I can't imagine what they might think when they are told what will very likely be lies about their mum only to find she didn't fight to save them once she escaped. Then again, I hope they can have compassion for all their father put her through, the kidnapping and abuse as well as the fact that it must be very hard to learn how to be a mother and fight for your children's protection and custody when you never had your mother fight for or even love you!

Wish I could've given this No Stars
After a brief bit of research, I found out that this is a work of fiction. Fair, but don't lie. The writing is appalling and cringe-worthy at best. Having read Girl A, the main witness's account of the Rochdale sex ring in 2009 and then reading this, it's disgusting that somebody is trying to make money off this book and claiming it's real. Just revolted. If the author wanted to write a story of this concept, she should've done exactly that and not palmed it off as real. It's just lies and quite frankly, terribly written. Don't, PLEASE don't waste your money.

Disappointing
If this is a true story, then it is the most horrendous account of abuse. I cannot imagine how anyone could survive the injuries inflicted. However, for me there are many things that do not ring true and are unconvincing. Therefore, I am of the opinion that this book is fiction.

Bringing awareness to an increasingly common crime
This is the first book I've read this year and I read it in 3 sittings, I usually get bored halfway through and never finish.Anna wastes no time getting to the story and after the first episode of rape I was shocked at how graphic she tells it.... I nearly didn't want to carry on but I'm glad I did.... it's a great read in a shocking and upsetting way. There are a lot of negative comments and disbelievers, I suggest you read the book and make your own mind up. But keep in mind, this started in the early 90's, a time when the healthcare system were not as acute as they are today on domestic and honour violence and dare I say it... as culturally aware as we are nowadays.I hope Anna finds the strength and support to one day take this family down. In the meantime she has helped bought awareness of an increasingly common crime.

Not sure!
I'm sorry but I am dubious about the whole story. Anna says that she was battered and raped every day for 13 years. She also apparently never ate much food and frequently starved herself. She was very thin frail and had broken arms and ribs from her beatings by an overweight man. How did she survive all this? Why did she rarely make an attempt to escape, for example, when the police came and tried to interview her and all the times she was hospitalized. How did she manage to have four healthy babies? Yes I believe she was held captive as a sex "slave" but I think that the story has been grossly exaggerated for impact. Sorry!

An amazing account of survival and true courage.
This was a powerful read that has shown courage, determination and a strong fight to survive horrendous abuse. This book highlights how children in society that are alone and not wanted by their family are a target for cruel, paedophiles that cannibal and abuse a child for years when there is no one to realise they have disappeared from society.Still today slavery exists and people are sold for sex to the abusers who are human life as an existence for pleasure. The need for professionals to recognise when something does not seen right and challenge this .The health visitor saved a life going above and beyond in her role to be punished by protocol that would never save a life.Lessons need to be learned and professionals need to be trained to recognise when they need to protect a life even when the loss of their job due to societies ignorance is at risk. This is a powerful and moving account of what is a hidden world of abuse that our most vulnerable children in society are at risk of being subject to every day .
