Season 4 - Maybe not as bad as you might have heard...
HighSchool DxD might just be the highest ranked haram anime out there depending on who you ask. I’d dare say it’s so good, that many fans have developed something of an emotional attachment to it. And nothing chafes a fan’s hide more than when their favorite show undergoes some kind of “change”. If you’re fan of this anime series, you’ve probably been following updates on season 4 for all throughout 2018, and you’ve heard some of the negativity on how the show has been changed, and all the backlash that was coming with it.The major source of the backlash was different art style of the characters. To quickly sum it up, I have to say, unfortunately, it looks like it was the victim of a lower budget, although I have not researched that. And as popular as the show is, I’m asking myself how is this possible…? Thankfully however, I’m happy to report that the general feel/flow of the story and the dialog is still on par with the last three seasons. The plot of season four compared to the last three seems kind of thin in comparison. Season four consists of two stories. The first introduces a new protagonist with a sacred gear, which has no appearance/follow up in the second half, and the second half is mostly just a rating game with another sacred gear introduced. And between these two stories, Issei is still trying to hammer out his feeling towards Rias, while dealing with some emotional baggage from season one. On the English voice acting side of things, we lost several people from season 3 including Issei (Josh Grelle). But I do feel the new cast did a pretty fair job in their rolls.IMP… the third season ended things on a note where it was open to a fourth, but it didn’t leave anything hanging in such a way that it was required. Season four however…. not so much. It has left at least two serious loose ends to where it’s going to need at least another season to wrap up.All in all, I guess I’m happy with it. Being the victim of a reduced budget (that’s what really happened) is one thing I won’t hold against it. However, here is my one an only real complaint… They started out with “episode 0” which re-capped the end of season three at the point where they save Asia from the devil Diodora Astaroth. And they completely re-wrote it…. And not for the better. Basically, from season three, episode 9 is re-written, and all remaining episodes were omitted. Loki’s curse never happens, and Rias doesn’t get kidnapped. I would say just do yourself a favor and skip episode zero… but we all know you’ll end up watching it anyway. I don’t know what they were thinking, but please don’t hold episode zero against the rest of the series.

Beautiful
Watched some shows on Funimation, this one a good one to pass the time; I like the show. I couldn't stand the simulcast with the weird censoring bars really distracted from the view experience. I like the new art style; very sharp. I'm glad that this season follow the cannon though I never read the light novels. Pre-ordered the Bluray which was release yesterday so not sure how the other reviewers reviewed a non-existent product. Came with Funimation digital copy which is a good added bonus. Bluray quality is noticeably better than streaming even with anime. Wish Amazon didn't ship these in soft mailers though, one corner of the product packaging was dented.

disapointed
First off i really liked the first and second season, third season was ok but not great. This season however fell seriously short of expectations. as other indicated the artist changed and i don't know if they were trying to make the characters seem more real but it fell short. should have kept with the original. the overall story was ok but they keep changing things that were different in earlier seasons. guess if your a fan you shouldn't miss this one but the high cost makes it hard to justify.

This anime is at the top of my list
Great fun. Plenty of pantie shots, lots of breasts. Great story line and humor. What more can a man ask for.

digital code not included
Sadly, the digital code was not included with the set. Thinking it was a simple error, I exchanged my purchase for a new one. However, the replacement had the same issue-- the DC was not included. It's very disappointing given the price of the item. I was looking forward to adding it to season 1-3 in my Funimation video library. Moreover, the story is weaker than previous seasons. Also, the dialogue is worse. There is unnecessary swearing. I appreciate well placed cursing for emphasis, but Issei's use of slang and profanity is no substitute for decent dialogue. It's downright sophomoric.Bottom line: wait for the "Essential" version to come out, and save a few dollars.

Excellent dub, terrible animation, worse story
Excellent dub, terrible animation, worse story. Obviously, someone in Japan want to kill the franchise, so they sabotaged the series. Funimations dub was excellent.

Not a true 4th season
This is not a true 4th season of high school DxD it is spinoff of high school DxD and episode 0 change the ending of season 3 to something else. Change some characters that met in the first 3 true seasons never met in this spinoff. art style has changed as well. Would not buy this if you watch the first 3 true seasons.

Story good but animation sucks.
The product itself arrived in good condition. The extra box containing the light novel isn’t in a protective case so it and the light novel took some very minor damage. It is a product issue not delivery. The season is great overall. The only problem I have with it is the lazy and somewhat ugly animation.

Worth the price, highly recommend if DxD fan
Really enjoyed watching this every week when it was airing on FUNi.Order came day of release (which I was a bit surprised about) came in great condition (art box was a bit dinged up but cards are perfectly fine). And personally I can confidentially say it's worth the $70.Sorry but from here on is reviewing what's in it, if you don't want to be spoiled for what's in it skip past the rest of my review. Was very excited to see once again another limited edition to add to my collection and this one did not disappoint.Came with alot of goodies that was unexpected the cover I thought would be the standard chip box like previous. But this time it has a great slip cover with two different pics the box itself on one side has Rias and the other Akeno (same as the dvd case itself also dvd cover is reversible). For the other things you get a copy of a chapter of the Light Novel (the one with Asia on it) translated into english on nice paper. The introduction (I believe it said but I call it a art book) the one with Xenovia on it is also a nice smooth book with all of the uncensored intermission scenes in it and character (can't remember the proper name) builds and emotion faces. The art cards are all of course uncensored so will not be showing those here. And the final peice is a nice (small but still nice) fabric poster. If you ended up reading my full review thank you, and sorry for any grammar mistakes and running on a tangent those are two things that I have alot of trouble with.

Decent anime-only continuation
While some people don't like this season because it went off on a different direction with a new studio and art style, it many ways it got back to its roots. True, Rias was only involved in battles in the last few episodes, and a friend of mine was unhappy about that, but Issei and his classmates, including those in the occult club, had considerable air time, and they made a new friend and ally, as well as encountered new enemies. It's a worthwhile addition to the franchise, and we can look forward to season 5 next year, with another arc being adapted.

Excellent
I did thoroughly enjoy it, as it does advance the main story in a few ways. However, I've been a big fan of the series for a good while and this is my least favorite season out of the 4. I don't care for the new animation style at all, some of the new plot and even the dialogue I didn't care for. Parts of it just don't feel right. That said if you're a fan of the series I would recommend adding it to your collection as it's still really good despite it's various pit falls
