A really solid ball winder
This is a really good ball winder. It worked really well, even with some really slippery silk yarn that I had. It doesn't snag, and it was super easy to stop and fix the yarn cake when the winder skipped. There are some parts of the winder that look like maybe they were from the other wood option, but it honestly looks really unique. I like it.It came mostly assembled, I just had to screw the yarn feeder on, and then place the spool on. My only real complaint is the clamp. It works fine, but if your table has any sort of curve at the edge, it wont clamp flat onto it. It still works and stays put, but I really do think that part could have been better designed. But overall I really like this winder. It's easy to use, quiet, and doesn't have the same issues my old plastic one had.

It's beautiful, yet it works poorly!!!
This is the only ball winder that I have ever used and it works horribly. No instructions came with this. How am to set it up to wind the ball (which direction to place the yarn on the tension thing) which I couldn't figure it out , and I've tried both directions. Yarn gets wrapped around the spindle, above OR below the forming ball, leaving loops of yarn on the ball. The loops end up getting knotted while I am knitting, so the ball ends up being a tangled mess. Then I end up spending a hour of more detangling the ball. Am I doing something wrong? How would I know because there were NO INSTRUCTIONS included. This device is junk.

A piece broke.
A small piece was broke off, and another piece will also come off, right now it is not hindering how it works. There was no instructions with it.

If you need a yarn ball winder, this is the one to buy!
The rosewood is lovely! There isn’t any place that hasn’t been well polished and smooth! The design of the ball winder is great! My husband knew that my ball winder was a complete failure and knew my frustration with using it. He went on line and found this one, took a chance and ordered it for my birthday. The craftsmanship is A+ , the design is well thought. It came with no assembly instructions, however they provided videos for assembling the ball winder then a video showing how to use it. I am completely satisfied with this product.

Would Recommend
I got mine earlier than expected as it comes from India, in just about 2 weeks. I was very happy with the rosewood, it is very attractive. Some of the hardware is a little more industrial looking than the pictures show, but that is a really minimal thing as the item overall is beautiful. It seems to work well and is very easy to assemble, especially with the product video. So far winding fine yarn is easy enough but when I take it off the dowel it is a little messy. But that may be an operator error. Overall I'm very happy with it! Would recommend.

Not worth the risk, damaged, only does 2.5oz before sliding off
This is a decently heavy product, but poorly designed and made. And ironically, some of the "good" reviews seem to not realize that's not how cakes are supposed to look. On refund request of the defective product, the return shipping was $81. As you can see in the photos, this makes a strange oblong ball, doesn't use the whole spindle and mine had several issues. First, the common direction of spinning (clockwise) knocks the nut off the spinner handle. It is not anti-threaded. The knob also doesn't spin so as you wind, you have to let the knob slip in your hand which is tedious and for fast winding, impossible. (Though this, I could have replaced it with a solid pin on the knob if it was the only problem.) The spiral metal pin to hold the yarn on mine spins around. It is not secure. It addition, after one gentle spin, the wood started shaving off at the screw port for the spindle. Due to the odd spinning shape, it doesn't problperly cake the ball for center pulling and made a painful pink and white spaghetti bowl from my first skein when try to knit hands-on.This is essentially a poorly drilled board with hammered in threads for the parts which causes tons of issues.Given the cost, this many problems is silly enough but despite it being damaged in several places, I can only "get my money back" if I pay return shipping to India... which is more than the cost of this poorly designed winder. I used my cheap plastic one for comparison with a 5oz fully wound ball.I did commercial yarn for this experiment, but as a spinner, weaver, etc. for a decade, I wanted to have a sturdier item for constant winding. This isn't it. There is no way this wouldn't obliterate my handspun.

Happy with this gift!
I received this in the Rosewood finish as a gift for Christmas (2022) to replace the (cheap) plastic yarn ball winder I owned. Love this! Some assembly required - watch a YouTube video to see how to put it together. Works very well - smooth and quiet operation. Great for winding skeins/hanks of yarn from a swift into a center-pull cake. Makes knitting/crocheting a pleasure when you can pull the yarn from the center! This is a great addition to my knitting/crocheting arsenal, and is a tool I use often. Love the look of the wood! Very happy with this yarn ball winder! (Note: it does not include a yardage counter, but you could certainly purchase that separately.)
