Fantastic quality
Works great, would recommend having a soldering iron and a screwdriver set. There is a small solder bead that is really easy to take off with an iron. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that will help with installation instructions. On the slim ps2 model it is a bit easier. Overall a pretty easy install, just be sure to be careful with the ribbon cables.

PS2 SCPH-79001 Works Like New
My original laser in my 79001 PS2 was failing. I tested a PS1 game, PS2 blue disk, & PS2 silver disk. The old laser didn't auto launch the PS1 game, but did boot from the menu. PS2 blue disk gave read error. PS2 silver disk too 20s to boot to in-game PS2 logo.Teardown, regrease, laser replacement, & reassembly took less than 20 minutes. Note, my new laser did not have the anti-static solder blob.New laser booted all 3 games to PS1/PS2 in-game logo in 13 seconds. No disk read errors, no games needed to launch from menu. PS2 works like new.

YOU ONLY NEED 2 SCREWDRIVERS AND A KNIFE!!
It took me about 30 minutes to replace the laser. I watched a YouTube video and it was an easy process. Don't be afraid to try it yourself. I did one and now I'm purchasing another to fix my SIL's for her kids.I collect game consoles so I bought a ps2 from someone on marketplace and didn't even think to test it. Now fast-forward 5 years, I'm finally getting around to plugging it in and trying to play games but the disc's won't read. A quick search on the internet says, replace the laser. I get a little nervous and think maybe I should just buy a new one. Well, the one I bought on marketplace was $40 (should have been a red flag, right?). A working one at 2nd hand stores start at $90. Figured a $20 laser replacement attempt was better than shelling out the other money. If it worked, I was only out $20. If it didnt, it wasn't going to anyway, and I'd spend the money at the 2nd hand stores. So glad I tried this first! Now, I am a bit handy as I do hobby woodworking and can follow instructions but this was really like 5 steps and it's plug and play. If you can play video games or follow a recipe, you can change this laser. One tip I did see online for anyone who doesn't have a soldering iron is that you can use the tip of a screwdriver. Heat it up and use it in a scraping motion (doesn't need too much pressure if it's hot enough) over the static blob and it'll come right off. Make sure you can see those 2 lines clearly.Good luck!!

Does not work
I removed the solder ball, but the lens does not work. My unit has a pin on it that remains pressed in, but my original one moves back and forth as necessary.

It works
I replaced the laser in an old PS2 slim 75000 series with this product. I read a lot of reviews and online articles and was still apprehensive about which one to get. Apparently different models had different lasers. I took a chance and it work perfectly. Load times of 2-4 seconds. Got to playing with my kids and have had a blast playing co-op games with my son in our treehouse. Yes, you read that right. TREEHOUSE with surround sound..lol. lots of utube videos to guide you through the process. It was easy. Take your time getting the ps2 cover off. I broke the power switch off and had to replace that as well.

2nd time the charm, works great now
First laser received only read blue ps2 disc and black ps1 games only aka CDs. It did not read the silver ps2 disk aka the dvd disc. Ordered a replacement arrived the next day, and it read all colored disk perfectly. Instructions were followed on both installations. The first laser turned out defective. But the 2nd one did the trick. Hope this helps.

Does the job.
Replaced laser lens on my old ps2 slim, scph-75001. Tested with black CD games and dvd games, all except one play fine. Oddly, despite playing a couple of games in poor condition (one appears to be resurfaced) just fine, the one that won’t play is super puzzle fighter ii turbo, which is in immaculate condition. Also, a translucent multicolored vertical line appears briefly on startup, but not during gameplay- not an issue in itself except that it’s suggests the replacement isn’t quite a perfect match for the original. Perhaps Sony’s copy protection measures are a factor, or it may not be quite as forgiving as the original with certain disc imperfections.I’m sure Sony isn’t making the new OEM part anymore, so, in terms of what’s going to be available for such an old system, this is a good bet.*You do need a soldering iron to remove the blob.

Replace the laser over pot adjustment!
My silver PS2 slim (model SCPH-79001) would not read PS2 blue or PS1 black discs. It would read DVDs but was very slow to spin up.I initially tried adjusting the CD potentiometer to get it working and after some adjustment, PS2 blue discs would work but would take a long time to spin up (I didn't have a PS1 disc at the time). A few days later I bought a PS1 black disc and that would not work. I then tried the PS2 blue disc again and unfortunately, that didn't work anymore either. There are conflicting opinions over the pot adjustment fix but in my experience, it is a temporary fix only and the amount of time you get out of the laser after the adjustment will vary greatly.I decided to replace the laser and ordered this one since the description says it supports 79XXX models. After watching a short video on how to replace it I dropped in the new laser and BAM! PS2 blue and PS1 black discs spin up IMMEDIATELY! I don't have any non PS2 blue discs to test but regular DVDs also spin up without issue. If you really want to fix your PS2 disc reading problems replacing the laser is the only way to go. It's relatively inexpensive and it brings your PS2 slim back to new!Highly recommended. Just make sure to remove the solder blob pointed out in the images prior to installation. Simple task with a soldering iron and some de-soldering braid.
