Big bass sound in a small package.
The media could not be loaded. The Aklot Fretless Electric Bass Ukuleke is just what I have been looking for in a bass. My usual instrument is the upright bass but I rarely play it because, due to its size, it is a pain to get out. My car is too small for my big bass so it does not leave the house. The Alkot Bass Ukuleke sounds similar to the upright but is easier to store, play, and gig with.First all of the PROS:* Great size. About 1/10th the size of my big bass.* Nice large/round Upright Bass sound.* Quiet unplugged practicing.* Built in EQ and tuner.* Great finish and set up. Noticed small burrs on two of the bridge holes that are easily fixed when I change strings.* The strings are easier on my hands.* Lots of string options when it is time to change strings.* Beautiful padded case.* Great value for the money.Cons:* Strings are a little sticky.* Some learning curve due to the short scale length. The fret marks really help.* I dislike the strap pattern. A personal choice that I intend to change soon.Overall, the Aklot Fretless Bass Ukuleke is a great bass at a great price. I will be playing bass more frequently because it is readily available and easier on my hands... Priceless!

Good Instrument at a good price
I'm impressed. I expected something much less playable for this price. I have the fretless African bass version (which does have a back door on it by the way, the picture doesn't show that), and it's beautiful and well built. The tuning pegs have a very high gear ratio so that they tune slowly, which I really like.Amazon shipped the instrument in a big box with almost no additional padding, so I had a chip in the side when I got it. I want to put my own character into the instrument so this was frustrating. Amazon! Stringed instruments need tighter packaging to stay safe! The Thundergut strings sound good but only play ok because of how tacky they are. It's very much like touching a rubber band -- and the sound from the strings sticking to your fingers is distracting. The open E rattles when you play it more than pp (a normal part of any bass ukulele I've played), but this one rattles a bit more than normal. You certainly won't be playing slap on these thundergut strings.I'm also getting some rattle around where the third fret for the G string would be, and around seventh as well -- after playing with the action adjustment, I found that this is actually because the string itself is much narrower for just a small section, so that when you press down on that section, the string above it rattles. This seems to be a manufacturing issue with the string, and on a fretted instrument it probably wouldn't matter. I've asked the manufacturer via Amazon if they would send me a new G string, and I'll (maybe) update with how that experience goes. The pickups are about in line with any low-mid active pickup. They work fine through a bass amp, and this sucker really has a nice standup/fretless J kind of sound. Just don't pluck too hard or you get a lot of rattle!EDIT -- after playing for 3-4 hours, the rattling is much less and the strings feel nicer to play. Might just need getting used to after steel strings, or maybe the strings actually mellowed when properly stretched. In all, this really is a beautiful, very playable instrument that I could use at a gig or in my studio, and for WAY less than competing brands.Update:Amazon sent me a new set of strings. Fabulous service there. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the fingerboard rattle around frets 3 and 7 on the g string, though it did improve. I raised the bridge pretty significantly on the D and G strings and the rattle is mostly gone, but the higher action does slightly change the tuning ratio. I've played this for quite a few hours now, and the thunder strings are much nicer to play on after about 10-12 hours break in.

Great for the price
I'm coming from an upright bass background, and I wanted something a bit easier to carry around and jam with. I've been eyeballing UBasses for a while now and finally bought this one. I really like it for what it is. At the price point it is very much worth the money.Initial impressions (1-day of messing around with it):Out of the box, it is solid, tunes up alright and sounds good acoustically (it is quiet). I don't have an amp with me right now so I'll test that later when I jam with friends. The body feels solid and reasonably well constructed. The fret board seems a little cheap to me, but I'm not sure what about it exactly. There is some buzzing on the E and A strings when playing aggressively. When playing a little softer it goes away. I bought the fretless version to better imitate the upright sound, so it does not have any fret buzz. The strings do take some getting used to and so does the scale length.Complaints:-slight buzz (see above)-back panel was missing a screw. (one of six so it isn't a problem... more cosmetic annoyance than anything I guess)-the A and E strings (stock Aquila brand) have little bumps on them that seem to be extra material or maybe the core bulging out. Doesn't seem to affect the sound at all, but I think I might replace the strings sooner than later.Case is a nothing special soft sided case. I think it will work well. Came with picks (probably won't use them) and a wrench for the tension rod.As an intro instrument, I am extremely happy for the price.

Great instrument, but
I love the look, feel and sound of this bass uke! OK unplugged, awesome through a 200 watt amp. BUT, after about 40 days the pickup on the G string stopped working. Otherwise, this would have been straight fives. On most songs I can work around that by playing up the neck. But shouldn't have to do that.

Fun size, surprising intonation
This is a quality instrument for a person of any stage of ability, not just beginners. Purchased for 1) its novelty, 2) compact size for portable jams, and 3) I liked the looks of it.I am a formerly paid musician, now just enjoying private practice time and the occasional gig, so I understood this instrument would have some limitations. And it does - the low E string intonation is just a hair off, and the rubbery strings have a different feel - but doesn't make it any less fun to play. Don't expect more than this instrument is designed for and you'll have a ball with it!
