Q: Can this accommodate a hydration pack

It's not designed to hold a hydration bladder, but you could drop one into the back panel that is designed to hold a laptop and run the tube out of the zipper opening.

Q: Is this north face recon model bag for men or women?

This is a unisex bag however it is not for high school or college students who tend to carry allot of books. Great for carrying a light jacket, laptop and water bottle that’s about it!

Q: How does the mesh pocket work? Once you stuff something in it, does it stretch out? Is there anything to fasten the pocket to keep things secure?

It should not stretch out of shape unless you put something very heavy in the pocket and leave it there for an extended period of time. It stretches to fit the contents, but goes back into shape when you remove the item. There is no fastener at the top, but a heavy elastic band at the top. It is most appropriate to put items like a rain jacket or other lightweight item in that mesh pocket.

Q: Laptop size: it says that the interior space is 18.9 in x 11.0 in. Is this accurate? I have a 17” laptop and a 16” laptop.

It is 11 inches wide however, the center may be 18.9 but the top has rounded corners. The edges are about 16.5 inches. I have a 13 inch laptop and have plenty of room to spare. It is well made, looks great, and light weight.
