Doesn't work as a capillary mat
If you are trying to build your own self-watering system, this will not work. The minute I looked at it, I suspected it wouldn't work. It's very think (nearly a quarter of an inch) and fuzzy. I cut a piece and tried it and and 12 hours later it hadn't wicked water at all. Very disappointed. I wish I could return it, but I had already cut it.Update: I tried soaking the mat before placing it on the rack. Once wetted, it appears to wick, as the material has stayed very wet for the last few days.So like many pumps, it looks like it will work once "primed" by a thorough soaking. I've upgraded it from 1 to 3 stars.

Great for Vacation Watering, or Seedling Starting
These capillary mats work great for watering seedlings while you’re on vacation! We got them because we were planning to be gone for a week right after planting our seedlings. We used them under seedling trays, fabric grow pots, and terra cotta pots, and all worked well. All the plants were alive and well when we got home. The fabric is easy enough to cut with scissors and easy to work with. It did its job with getting water from the water trays to each of the plants / seedlings. We ended up leaving it under there when we got back from vacation so we only had to refill the water trays for the seedlings about once a week. The one issue we had was that after about a month (we took too long before potting up), some mold did start to form on the seedling trays from never drying out, but there was no mold on the mats, and the seedlings were all fine.We will use these again next year.

USELESS NOT WICKING!
Have 2 inches on both ends of a grate, hanging down into 2 inches of water, inside A 1020 tray. It's NOT wicking above water line!!

Works, if set up "Correctly"
I can honestly say I was skeptical based on some of the reviews but I did many tests and as long as you set it up correctly it will work. I have included 2 pictures,1 with a container of water on the same level as my trays with the extra piece hanging in water and then one with a bucket below the trays with the hanging piece in the bucket. The bucket method, as I have it set up, does not work. The only thing that I can think of is because the bucket is below the trays, because the moment I moved the other container of water to be the same level it started sucking up water. So my advice to you is this:#1: cut it to be the full size of the bottom of your tray, with a good "hanging bit"# 2 wet the fabric inside the tray thoroughly and drain off excess amount.# 3 put hanging bit of fabric in a container of water on the same level as the trays, make sure to wet the hanging bit as well.#4 and lastly make sure the bottom of your plant trays has a hole big enough with the soil touching that hole or slightly through that hole so that the water can siphon up and into the plant.

Works great
Ok, this is the first time I've ever used a capillary mat. I have no experience with them. Someone mentioned it is just like felt in a review. The texture is felt like but probably 2 - 3 times thicker and slightly different. I've seen a few youtubers compare capillary mats as being similar to felt. Because it is much thicker and does an excellent job wicking water I think these are the real deal and will hold up much longer than a normal felt would. I would order from them again.
