No spring. It folds to close comb and unfolds to open. I've had my comb for a couple of months, but only used it a few times when I wanted straight hair style. So far, it stays closed/open until I fold/unfold it. I like his comb a lot.

This is a comb and has no temperature setting.

Q: Can you use this on Africa America hair..

I don't know why not. Essentially it's just a fine tooth comb with a guard to hold down the hair. So if you can use any fine tooth comb you could use this.
