my favorite fennel seed
I recently rediscovered fennel seed & these days I eat A LOT of fennel. I'm a WFPB vegan & I LOVE my spices (ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, mustard seed, the list goes on & on). To give you an idea, I've purchased over 10 lbs. of fennel seed in the past 2 months alone. (I've probably consumed just about half so far). What prompted me to write this review is a question I had about fennel seed. I answered it by trying 2 different brands. My understanding is that fennel seed is ready for harvest when it turns green & then literally falls off the plant when it turns brown. So green fennel seed & brown fennel seed are both tasty & edible. I wondered about the difference between the taste & read that green purportedly tastes better. That's part of the reason I have so many pounds of it. I bought a 5-lb. bag from another company for comparison. The other brand looked more green in color than Frontier's on-line & was more green in actuality. I suspect one's preference for fennel seed depends greatly on how one uses it. Both brands of fennel seed are tasty & will be used & enjoyed. That said, Frontier is my personal favorite. I like fennel seed best whole (vs. ground). I use it mostly in hot teas & hot cereals after being steeped in boiling water for at least a few minutes. I also like chewing the raw seed but don't do that very often. My husband, on the other hand, prefers fennel seed ground (vs. whole) in hot tea & also in rice dishes. I don't think my husband tastes much difference between the 2 brands (at least in part because his tea & rice dishes are strongly flavored with other spices too.) The difference is pretty visible, as I said--the other brand being greener & smaller, & Frontier being more brown-green & bigger/plumper. I prefer a plumper fennel seed, especially in my hot cereal & also prefer the taste of Frontier's. The two brands are comparable in price, so you may wish to do your own taste test. (I would recommend choosing a smaller size than 5-lbs. the first go-round based on my experience :-) As a side note, I also ordered turmeric powder from these 2 companies as well & find that I prefer Frontier's turmeric too. It appears a darker/rust-brown-orange vs. the other brand's slightly lighter orangey orange. Once again both brands are good quality & will be used (eventually). How wonderful it is to have such great choices of high-quality spices to choose from. These days I trust Frontier for most of my spice needs. Thanks Frontier! All the best & enjoy your own decision-making process :-)

Great quality fennel seed and price.
Fennel seed is a very versatile spice, whether you use it in whole seed form, or ground. These seeds have very good, strong sweet and savory flavors, and I have used them successfully for making rye breads, italian sausage, both Mediterranean and Italian seasonings, and in ground form as a component of Chinese Five Spice. It can also be beneficial for digestion and congestion when used in tea.I've gotten the most mileage out of these seeds by making my own homemade italian sausage (ground beef or pork, minced garlic, fennel seed, salt, pepper, and paprika or crushed red pepper, depending on how much heat you want), as store bought Italian sausage is nearly 2x the cost per pound, compared with ground pork or ground beef. Save money and make Italian sausage yourself! Also, don't bother paying $4 for less than an ounce of this spice at a grocery store, as you can get two whole pounds of great quality stuff here for under $10!Haven't attempted to grow these seeds, but will report back if successful.

Fresh & flavorful
These are delicious fennel seeds. I searched around quite a bit & ended up going with this brand, and am now glad I did. As soon as I opened the package I could smell the potent, delightful aroma of the fennel seeds instantly. The seeds are fresh, vibrant and so very fragrant. I've used at least 1/3rd of the bag thus far, mostly in my marble rye breads and it adds such a fantastic flavor profile to the already delicious bread. Definitely worth the price.

Use sparingly
It came in a metallic style pouch but I expected as much. Can't complain with a price like that. It's fennel, the seeds seemed good quality and tasted like you'd expect. If you never had fennel before, it has an almost smokey, licorice taste. It's very strong so you only need to use a little. I bought this for sausages, it should do very well in pepperoni.I crust a few in my mortar, wow the smell hit me hard. Fresh stuff.

I am not easily impressed. I have wrote a few other reviews ...
WOW!!!!!!!. I am not easily impressed. I have wrote a few other reviews and for good reason. I am not easily impressed. I am honest and impartial and very reasonable. HOWEVER!!!!!! THIS ROCKS!!!! In a review I read that these weren't good cause they were strong and smelled of licorice. Well that's exactly how they should smell. Very old and improperly stored fennel might be rather bland or be less then fragrant. But when I make sausage and use spices I don't want them to have the texture of the piggy still rolling in the hay. Less seasoning more taste less texture or matter mixed with the meat but superior taste is what I'm after. And you can only get that with the best of herbs and seeds or spices. And trust me 2 teaspoons ground in my mortar and pestle and left for a short trip to the store apon my return the whole house had a very strong and fragrant smell of.......... you guessed it. LICORICE!... HA HA HA HA HA. I just left a review for marjoram that was more like hay as far as fragrance and taste. I left it 1 star because I couldn't leave any lower. If I could leave 6 stars on this item (frontier fennel) I CERTAINLY WOULD. PRICE IS GREAT ALSO.

I use it a lot.
I was glad to find that I could order 2 pounds worth of Fennel Seed for roughly the same price as 4.5 ounces would cost me at the grocery store. (That includes shipping and tax and such.) What is more, I find I enjoy the taste of this Fennel Seed, it seems a bit fresher then the brand I bought at the grocery store.I use it on/in many things, so I certainly go through it quite fast. I would definitely order from Frontier again when I need spices and such. It seems to me to be a good quality product, and it is so much more affordable then the grocery store to buy it this way.
