I moved into a flat which had a flea infestation. I have indoor cats and so as well as having to treat the carpets and my own furniture etc, I also had to now treat my cats. DE sprinkled into the carpets, left for a few days then hoovered up did a brilliant quick job of getting rid of them, as well as washing my cats bedding every couple of days as well to break the flea, egg, cycle. You can also spread it into your pets fur (so long as it's not so much that they breath it in). It works on fleas and other pests by drying them out.
