A great mashup of the military and monster genres written by a top notch action/adventure writer.
Gayne C. Young has carved out an interesting writing niche by penning a series of excellent novels that combine military action/adventure with monsters. His novel BIGFOOT: THE VIETNAM DEFENSIVE DECLASSIFIED is a prime example. Set during the Vietnam War, it follows an American special forces team sent on a classified mission into the jungles of Cambodia to find out what happened to another squad who disappeared there. The novel is said to be “inspired by true events” and – as cryptozoology buffs who read the book will know – it is indeed inspired by the tales of Bigfoot-like “rock apes” American soldiers reported seeing in Vietnam. As a fan of both cryptozoology lore and military fiction, I loved this fast-paced, vividly written tale. It gets your attention right from the start with these intense opening lines: “The creature drove its teeth into Hamilton’s nose. The monstrous incisors cut through skin, lacerated cartilage, and severed muscle. The beast’s more than two-inch-long canines plowed downward and scraped jawbone. The unknown reared back taking with it a mouthful of flesh, soft tissue, and bone.” That’s just a small, er, taste of what’s to come in the chapters that follow, as the special forces squad sent to find out what happened to Hamilton and the soldiers who were with him have their own bloody encounters with the deadly creatures. Gayne is a top notch action/adventure novelist and BIGFOOT: THE VIETNAM DEFENSIVE DECLASSIFIED is a great mashup of the military and monster genres. Highly recommended.

Entertaining
A fun read about so-called "Bigfoots" during the time of the Vietnam War that is full of action and a quick read. I liked the descriptions and the story. I would read more by this author. It is supposedly based upon accounts reported by soldiers themselves.I would recommend another proof-reading of the manuscript, there were some misspellings and grammar errors. Overall, though, I recommend it.

Very action pack story, first Bigfoot book from Vietnam I've ever read.
Pretty much a action packed read from start to finish. Could not put it down till I read it from start to finish. As you see from my post name I read every Bigfoot book I can get my hands on and this one is a must read.

Good story and characters
This was a good story and accurate in feel of the jungle. It was dirty and wet. War was not pretty and many actions weren't either. The ending lends itself to characters reappearing either in book 2 or in other stories by the author. The reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating...editing. Kneipe followed Sutton up the rope followed by several other soldiers followed by Kneipe. At one point, Kneipe was called Smith. There were a few word repeats as well. Nothing serious enough to make me stop reading nor refuse to read anything else by the author, just dropped his rating. I do recommend the book if you want adventure, gore and beasts.

Titillating
This was the best bigfoot book I've ever read! I keep looking for books about bigfoot But they're usually so cheesy just like the cheesy movies. This 1 was not.

Interesting but too quick of a read
Interesting but too quick of a read. Much speculation as no witnesses to occurrences of many attacks.

5 Stars
Different kind of Bigfoot story. This one takes place in Vietnam during the conflict. Soldiers face an enemy worst than the Vietcong.
