Pizza, The Food For The Soul
This is a charming, poignant, feel-good film about two sisters and their friend who work in a pizza place, a pizza place that makes " a slice of heaven." One sister is destined for Yale, the other may marry a wealthy young man, and the third is having difficulty making a commitment to the man she loves.Kat, played by Annabeth Gish, as well as working in the Mystic Pizza Place, also babysits for Tim's daughter, and falls in love with Tim, played by William R. Moses, who is married. His wife is away on business. Tim is attracted to Kat. This love "affair" is headed for disaster, however. Jojo, Kat's friend, played by Lili Taylor is madly in love with Bill, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, who desperately wants to marry Jojo, but Jojo cannot commit to marriage. Bill then says he can no longer go on with Jojo, which breaks her heart. Daisy, Kat's sister, played by Julia Roberts, is an outgoing, extroverted type, a somewhat no-holds -barred, beautiful young woman who meets Charlie, played by Adam Store, in a bar, playing pool. He is immediately attracted to her, and after playing pool with her leaves with the woman he came with. However, he hunts Daisy down, and they begin dating and become intimate.Charlie is from a wealthy family. He had been in law school, and told Daisy that he took a year off from law school. He much later reveals the truth to Daisy that he cheated on a test in law school and was expelled from school, which puts him in bad stead with his father. In contrast, Daisy is from a poor, Portuguese family. When she meets Charlie's family she feels the difference. The owner of Mystic Pizza, Leona, played by Conchita Ferrell, makes the best pizza in the world as she claims. A renowned food critic comes to her pizza place, and orders the Mystic Pizza, the specialty of the house, eats about two bites from one slice, pays his bill and leaves. The next time he is on TV critiquing, he says that Mystic Pizza is a rustic place with okay service but the Mystic Pizza is "superb." The phone starts ringing off the hook asking if one needs reservations for Mystic Pizza. Leona, besides being a perfect pizza maker adores the three girls who work for her, and treats them as if they were her daughters, and does something special for Kat.This film is well worth watching for the love between sisters, the love between friends, the love between man and woman, and man and woman's love for pizza. Moreover, the pizzas look delicious.Annabeth Gish is outstanding as Kat. Julia Roberts as Daisy is also outstanding and beautiful. Lili Taylor is excellent as Jojo. Adam Storke is excellent as Charlie. Conchita Ferrell as Leona is excellent. William R. Moses is very good as Tim. Vincent D'Onofrio is excellent as Bill. The supporting cast is outstanding.

... can go back time and time again and you enjoy it as much as you did the fist time ...
"Mystic Pizza" is one of those rare movies you can go back time and time again and you enjoy it as much as you did the fist time around, and maybe, you can find little new tidbits here and there that makes you realize how special it is.On the surface is just a simple story about two sisters Daisy (Julia Roberts) the wild child, Kat (Annabeth GIsh) the straight A-student going to Yale on a scholarship, and their friend Jojo (Lili Taylor) a tiny whirlwind of a girl in love with a Bill (Vincent D'Onofrio) she just cant decide to marryThe three young women work as waitresses at Mystic Pizza under the watchful eye of Leona (Conchata Ferrell) the owner, whose pizza is legendary for its secret family recipe. Along the way they live life with each other, their families and their love interests which causes more than a couple of hiccups in the process.Daisy and Kat's relationship is not an easy one, since they are so very different, but their sisterly bond gets tested when innocent Kat gets a part-time job as a babysitter for Tim (William R. Moses), an architect who has just moved into town and whom she befriends a little too close while his wife is in London for business. When Kat gets a hard reality check once Tim's wife comes back home unexpectedly, shattering Kat's illusions about her relationship with him, Daisy feels moved to console her sister in her hour of heartbreak. As the movie progresses Daisy meets a suitor of her own, a rich kid name Charlie Windsor Jr. (Adam Storke) whom she starts a relationship with, despite the fact they are from different parts of town. After an awkward dinner at his family's house and a whole barrel of fish dumped on his Porsche by Daisy in front of a country club when she thinks he is cheating on her, they break up only to be reunited by chocolate ice cream and a maybe by the end of the movie.Jojo finally gets married to Bill making everybody happy, Leona gets raving reviews on her pizza from a well-known food critic who makes a surprise appearance at the pizza parlor, Kat gets money for Yale from Leona who gives her a check when she destroys the one Tim gives her as an apology for what happened between them and in a cute little scene at the end while the three of them wonder about the future Jojo asks "What the hell do you think Leona really puts in that pizza?" Classic!!If you haven't seen "Mystic Pizza" please do, you will enjoy it if only for the wonderful performances of the three lead characters, and for you who have already seen it, maybe several times as I have, revisit this wonderful cinematic gem. It's definitely good for the soul.EWB-Edison, NJ
