Tyler, the Creator - Way more than shock value
The concept behind Tyler the Creator's albums are more interesting than any artist I've listen to. Tyler's songs reference his tweets, videos he's in, and most of all: his life. The one thing that will stand out is that his music is personal, like it or not. In order to decide whether it is worth listening to, know that Tyler the Creator's albums' are complete works that need to be listen to in order, in their entirety. While both albums, Bastard and Goblin, have plenty of stand alone singles sprinkled in, Each track progresses and reveals more and more of the dark, murky, complex world that is Tyler the Creator (or Wolf Haley). Rather than go through each track and try to explain to you why each song is so great, I will highlight the last four tracks of the first CD.Following the format of his first album, "BASTARD", there is a juvenile, misogynistic track that is intentionally poorly written toward the end of the album. Similar to "Tina" from "BASTARD", "BSD" is the comic relief. This is the end of the mix between singles and album continuum tracks. As Tyler said "Every song is like a movie to me, I want to go into detail." and he wasn't kidding. After this track comes Window, an 8 minute track which features quite a few stars in the OF gang. At the end (no spoilers) Tyler destroys his world, and he is sobbing. The end of this track is so heart wrenching and dark, it is borderline cinematic. At this point, personally, I almost can't go on listening. Tyler knows this, and follows this song with a smooth, feel good, melancholy instrumental. This is a perfect transition to the final track. While it sounds like it was made in Fruity Loops, this transition track adds depth to the album. This last track is the resolution, the climax "per se." Tyler the Creator explains the whole idea behind his Album (the multiple personalities and what not). Those who choose to simply skip through the tracks and judge it immediately are missing out on music with real depth. If you like Hip Hop and all that, this album might not be for you. If you're between the ages of 17-26, and possibly have problems coming to terms with not having a real father, put this in your CD-drive.

RANDOM DISCLAIMER!!
I was exposed to Oddfuture by the boyfriend of a work colleague who was listening to a lot of the Earl Sweatshirt underground stuff that was distributed for free via the OF website. After visiting the site, browsing around and listening to music samples and seeing Tyler's video for "She", I knew I had to own the album. It's profane and explicit and all of the things that most critics of originality absolutely despise...but honestly, if you care about true originality in a time where rap and hip-hop is defined by whatever 50 Cent song breaks through to the top 40, this album will be a true gem in your collection. Tyler the Creator is completely unapologetic in his lyrics and his angst and I think he really set the bar high with his first major studio release. Although it's undoubtedly tough for many to tolerate, it is a fantastic representation of what OFWGKTA is all about. Most anti-Tyler/anti-OF folks would listen to this and never get past the vulgarity, never stopping to appreciate the intricacy and creativity in the beats, rhyme schemes and colorful imagery that the lyricists of OF use in creating their songs. The cd (like many) has its filler tracks, but 70% of the album is worth listening to over and over and over again. "She" is an instant classic with the suave touch of Frank Ocean's hook, and the brutal honesty of life through Tyler's eyes is conveyed in the track "Nightmare" (my personal favorite on the cd). In short...this cd isn't for everybody. If you don't like the clips, don't buy it. Simple as that. If you want to challenge conventional wisdom and throw support behind a fresh perspective on hip-hop, drink up the kool-aid and download this album. You won't be disappointed.

Goblin Vinyl Record Review
This review is about the quality of this record, not the music. If you're looking to buy this on vinyl, you probably already like what you've heard from Tyler. The overall packaging of this record is outstanding. The sleeve itself has more of a matte fabric feel to it instead of that a glossy photo feel that most modern records have. Instead of normal white sleeves, the records themselves are housed in sort of pouch-sleeve that has photography on it. Custom stickers are used for the grooves instead of having the record label. These records are pressed on 120 or 140 gram vinyls (I can't tell because it doesn't feel flimsy like a modern 120 gram) and contain the sound very well. The levels on this record sounded good to me as I did not notice any clipping or distortion in the music. Whoever mastered these discs knew what they were doing. Also, the LP comes with a download code for a digital version of the album, so you can't complain there. It is worth noting that XL Records created the vinyl release of this, and all other records I have purchased from them are of equal or greater quality.Overall, I would say that this record is fantastic. The sleeve is beautiful, the insert sleeves have photography on them, the pictures in the gatefold have a cool photograph look to them, the music plays well and you can download a digital version for free. From a record collector's perspective, this whole package feels like a very well put together, and at the low price of $17 plus shipping, you can't go wrong with this release.
