Too tall for my needs
Filter was too tall for my needs therefore I haven’t used it, nor can I accurately review it. Double check measurements.

Good taste and odor filters.
Based on the sellers’ description these filters are coconut charcoal only and do not contain the silver antibacterial layer found in the original Purewell or Berkey filters. As such, they do a good job removing taste and odor. The 3-stage filters from Purewell do the same, as well as kill bacteria and lower total dissolved particles. They cost twice as much as these, but I think they are worth it.

This pair of gravity fed water filters are of excellent quality being made of an activated carbon filtering media for exceptional performance and typically filter 6000 gallons each before they require replacing…depending on the quality of water you are filtering, of course. I use two at a time in my gravity water system and they work great! They can be surface cleaned periodically as needed and it’s not a bad idea to surface flush them as well. The periodic cleaning is great for maintaining excellent results before requiring replacement themselves. They come sealed and wrapped tight until ready to use with the washers and wing nuts attached, see photo. They also include great instructions on use etc. These, otherwise known as “Black Filters” for short because they are black in color, are of the best out there for using in your compatible gravity water filter system IMHO. They filter at a fairly high rate too producing great tasting water for your whole family. One thing, be sure to purge these of air before use while rinsing them off of any excess carbon particles from manufacturing before installing. This step can be done at the faucet directly or with a priming device that functions similarly and is sold separately….this necessary step is easy to do and takes just a few minutes. Personally, I have found it easy to prime these directly with the faucet using a priming washer to seal the gap between the faucet and the filter. I have kept a priming washer set aside for this purpose from a previous purchase. Note, this set does not include a priming washer that are typically grey in color and a bit thicker although one is not absolutely needed it does help to seal the gap with less water leakage during the purging process. These replacement filters ensure exceptional quality water for your gravity water filtration system and I highly recommend them!

Not bad as far as what’s currently available in early 2025.
The media could not be loaded. As of late 2024, the EPA has ordered Berkey to stop making their signature black carbon filters for their line of water filtration systems because they contain silver which is known to have antimicrobial properties. The EPA has decided to classify these silver-containing filters as “Pesticides” since they kill “pests”. This is causing Berkey to spend tons of time and money suing to have that ruling reversed. The outcome is eagerly awaited by Berkey filter users worldwide. In the meantime, there are many other manufacturers across the globe willing to step up and provide us with replacement filters that they claim are compatible with Berkey systems. The two-pack of filters that I’m reviewing arrived in excellent condition due to the heavy paper “collars” around the stem of each filter, which also protected the black rubber washer and the wing nut on the stem.Unfortunately, there is nothing provided for priming the filters. Usually, Berkey filters arrive with a priming button (a thick rubbery gasket/washer that you use to direct your water faucet’s flow through the filter under light pressure). Since there wasn’t one of these included and I hadn’t ever used a Berkey filter before, I needed to go online and order a priming kit. It included a silicone primer that attaches to the faucet, as well as an adapter to make it possible to prime fluoride filters (sold separately - see my review).Once the black carbon filters are primed per Berkey’s online instructions (this filter’s manufacturer recommends soaking it in clean water and “gently shake it a few times to activate and clean the cartridge”, not the best practice), they can be installed in the filtration system. After that, you can perform the Red Food Dye test to ensure proper filtration, but this filter’s manufacturer does not mention it.If the black filter elements pass the red food dye test (these did), clean both chambers and reinstall your black filters and any fluoride filters, if you’re using them. It is recommended to discard the first batches of filtered water since there’s a good likelihood that it would contain charcoal. After that, you are good to go! Enjoy your clean water!
