How does Mountainsmith celebrate its 40th anniversary? We stepped into our stretch pants, styled our mullets, pulled out our scrunchies and dug through decades of old workbooks, stories, and photos to narrow down our top two iconic 80s packs. Meet the Tour Classic. Because 80s gear is as much about neon ski bibs as it is about classic pack design. Originally built in the 80s, the Tour inspired the lumbar pack craze and years of pack innovation that would follow. From college campuses to day hikes in the mountains, it was designed as much for the everyday dirtbag as it was for the weekend warrior. Today, the limited edition Tour Classic returns in its original design. A true blast from the past, it is an authentic retro pack that's built to perform as well today as it did yesterday. So load up your gear, tighten up your waistbelts, and hit the ground running with the lumbar pack that started it all. With a tuckaway waistbelt and removable shoulder strap, the Tour Classic doubles as a lumbar pack and messenger bag for adventures on the trails or on the daily ride to the office. The limited edition Tour Classic also comes with the signature Mountainsmith 40th Anniversary Badge. All Mountainsmith products come with the Forged for Life Guarantee, the official Mountainsmith lifetime warranty.

Very versatile rucksack!
Quite versatile. Largest volume of MS lumbar packs. Can use with shoulder strap as messenger bag/cross chest carry. Good lumbar pack...able to carry more stuff, more comfortably than a belt pack. It's especially effective with Strapettes. Converts it to a rucksack with adjustable waist belt, padded shoulder staps and sternum strap. Carry up to 12 #. It's comparable to an Army rucksack...smaller than a day pack. I use it for second bag for carry-on luggage...not as tempted to over pack...easy to do. It will can carry 2x Nalgene .75 l or 2x1l Nalgene water bottles...I replaced .75 l snap cap with Humankind screwtape cover...slip adjustment stap in between screw top and bottle cover...voila, can't lose water bottle...water gets heavy! The old style bag has a front pocket that is much wider than the new style "sleeve"-like front pocket. I think the old style holds more stuff. In the main pocket is a smaller zippered pouch that you can put small objects...pens, flashlight, etc. There are 2 straps over exterior front pocket that will carry a shell On the new bag, the waist belt has a cellphone pocket but my Samsung Note 8 with Otterbox Defender cover doesn't fit.

Mountainsmith Quality and Great Pack
I use this as my ski pack. I had the original and love it, used it until it is almost un-usable. I was ecstatic that they brought this back. Love this pack.Pro: Perfect size for me as a ski pack.Cons: None. Should have bought 2 so I have a spare.

Great hipbag for day hikes and travel.
This is a replacement. I had the same bag for nearly 20 years but it fell off my cart two years ago and I’ve missed it for all my travels a day hikes. I use it fir caring all sorts of things - electronics, camera, sweaters. Etc.

Classic, Retro Design with the Latest Features
I've been using a classic, Cyclesmith Trailhead (Mountainsmith) lumbar pack for 25 years. I still use the pack almost daily to carry my tools, pump, a spare tube, nutrition, wallet, phone, keys, etc. on my bike rides. The Tour Classic is almost identical in every way to my 25 year old pack except that the Tour Classic added bottle holder pockets on each side, a Mountainsmith 40th Anniversary Badge and removable shoulder straps. The Tour Classic is also Strapette compatible (sold separately). The Tour Classic appears to be well made and it looks almost exactly like my old one (only clean and odor free). In summary, the Tour Classic has retro design with updated but improved features.
