is this bike okay for someone 5'1''?  somewhere I read 700c  wheels means 29 in, i can ride 26" bike comfortably, but not 28". Thanks.

If you are 5'1", this may be too large of a bike for you but each user has a different preference/comfort level.  Schwinn Discover Women's Hybrid Bike (700C Wheels) model S5397 has an 18" frame according to the manufacturer.  700c wheels are different than a 29" wheel. For the casual bike riders, most individuals use the size (diameter) of the wheels: 20", 24", 26"...etc to make the selection of the bike they wish to purchase. Bikes measured this way have frames designed relative to the tire size, so the larger the tire, the larger the frame. Some bike manufacturers may use a simple overall bike measurement such as x-small, small, medium, large, x-large; the bike size is usually on a sticker somewhere on the frame on other brands. ( note:Only the custom bikes from Schwinn are sized xs, small, med, large or xl though and this is not a 'custom bike') The manufacturer may label the bikes Boy's, Men's, Girl's, Women/Ladies however, they are not only meant for younger or older individuals. The rider will need to go by their height/inseam size. Keep in mind that for the 700c series road and hybrid bikes, the rim is larger in diameter so it will bring this frame higher up. These type of bikes(700c wheeled and hybrid) may be better suited for an individual 5' 7" and taller. I am a senior wanting to ride for fitness, trips to the grocery store, around town carrying light camera gear for nature shots is the bike 4 me?

I am 70 and do exactly that.  I bungie cord a plastic basket on the back and carry milk etc 4 miles one way from the grocery store.  The 21 speeds are great because I ride into the wind and ride back in much higher gear. It came mostly assembled and needed no adjustment.  Keep the tires at 60 PSI and it flies and will outrun a younger person with balloon tires.  I have had it for 1 1/2 years and ride it everywhere. Do change the seat to a cloud 9 one for comfort. Get it you won't regret it.

Can you sit straight up like a cruiser? How are the handle bars swept back?

No, you cannot sit straight up like on a cruiser bike. The handle bars can be adjusted, but they will not allow you to be positioned without bending over a bit. It can get tiring at a point but not so bad that you will have back pain. I just let go of one side of the handle bars and sit upright to stretch my back. I also changed the seat which makes the bend and ride bearable. You are sitting up and bending over slightly at the same time. It's a good smooth riding bike. No problem shifting gears or braking.  I really enjoy riding it. Hope this hepls everyone.

im a man only 5 2 in. will this bike be to tall to ride?

Though I don't own this bike, in my opinion,  this will not be a good fit for  a 5' 2" man (I am of that height).  You will need a small frame (15" or lower)  bike. Some  700C bikes come in that small frame but would require some research. Probably you can ride this bike, but for safety reasons better to look for a small frame bike. The critical aspect  is the top tube height.  You should be able to straddle the bike without your crotch hitting the top tube. For a ladies bike, it  shouldn't be a problem as the top tube is shaped differently.
