Q: Can this be used with wax melts instead?

I wouldn't advise it the cast iron burner gets really hot that you wouldn't be able to hold or touch it. I merely use it now to place sea salt inside with a candle inside so when burns down the wax from candle goes onto the salt instead and can be then disposed off safely.

Q: How long do the charcoal discs tend to stay hot? In other words how long does the charcoal/incense burn for?

The burning is not the pot it's in it the actual coal it depends on what type of coal and the quality of it nothing to do with the actual vessel. Its pretty decent only thing is its metal and stays hotter for longer. Not bad product.
