Certified and Easy to Use
I purchased this kit because it is one of the certified lead tests federally and for my state. It is designed for contractors but I found the kit easy to use and the results were easy to read. All of my tests came out negative, so I can't speak about positive test results. One great feature is that the test does vouch for a negative result. For many kinds of chemical tests, only a positive result is meaningful; in other words, if you didn't find it, it doesn't mean it's not there. You may need to test using another mechanism. It's nice that D-lead Paint can actually confirm a negative result. I don't know the underlying test methodology so I am basing this on the test instructions / claims. The test kit is all-inclusive in that it comes with all the pieces you need for the test, and more than I would expect - including a razor blade and wipes for cleaning the surfaces. The only remaining ask would be plastic gloves since the kit literally has everything else and gloves may not be in available in the house (though we do have razors and wipes). You clean the test area with the wipe and then use a provided tool to extract a circular test sample. The metal tool basically cuts a hole in a surface. The sample needs to have the correct area for the test to be accurate. Extracting the sample was more difficult than other lead tests where you simply rub the surface. I tried it with horizontal and vertical surfaces. For the latter, I was able to sometimes cut and pick up a perfect circle but for the horizontal surfaces, I often had to go back and scrape off the sample using the razor blade. This can be a tedious downside given that the test requires the correct area. You drop the sample into a vial full of one solution, wait and add a second solution. (There are test strips to confirm the test solution has not expired.) Then use the provided color card to check the result. If negative, you wait a longer time to verify the negative result.Pros:Certified lead test kitThoroughness of the results - reference card is easy to use and able to validate negative resultsCons:Collecting samples can be tediousPrice - more expensive than the 3M test swaps**My understanding is that these two test kits use different mechanisms - therefore it is best to use both to validate your results, especially if you have a negative result.

If you can't take the heat, stay our of Tucson
Unlike other reviewers, my expiration date was fine, so I was ready to go. I read all the really detailed, government-esque instructions, not a bad thing in this case, actually reassuring. I used the clever set of tools to produce a clean sample of several layers of paint at once, scored and broken the sample to expose more surface area for quicker results, with another supplied tool. And it tested clean. Great. Then did the cross check, then over, then over. There was no change on the test strip, which should have changed to black with a drop of Solution 2. So the tedious and exacting work, about a half hour to do it all just right, came to nothing.I suspect the problem was storage temp during the shipping process. 90 degrees F was max but since I'm in AZ that temp is nothing special and 105 and higher is common this time of year. If this had been spelled out at sale page I would have taken special precautions, such as having it sent to my PO Box instead of the mailbox, or something. At any rate, the house we were thinking of buying was no good for other reasons so lead became a non-issue. But the main problem here is that I was not informed of the heat sensitivity

I was short dated too
I returned this product without using it. Mine came with a very short date as well. I can't exchange it with Amazon's policy, but they paid return shipping. When I get my money back I will buy again. I still need the product, but I need it to last longer than a few weeks. They must be clearing out old stock.
