Why Do I Ever Try Anything Else?
I placed an order for 4 pairs of cargo shorts from Amazon, all size 42 waist, all completely different brands made in completely different places. I'm 6'1" tall, weigh about 250 pounds, and have VERY fit, strong legs and a large-ish waist. The shorts I ordered were these Riggs, Dickies Men's Loose Fit Twill Cargo Short , Carhartt Men's Rugged Cargo Short Relaxed Fit , and Southpole Men's Belted Ripstop Basic Cargo Short .Riggs is my go-to brand for shorts and pants, so I already knew what to expect going in. But comparing them to the other 3 brands exemplified why I prefer Riggs over all the others. The waist is at the perfect height, the legs are a great size (both length and volume), the crotch area is roomy and allows great freedom of movement, all the pockets are a great size and easy to access, the material is tough but compliant, and there's thoughtful little touches throughout (loops for attaching stuff, leather hip pocket protector sewn in, etc). The buttons are easy to use yet secure, and the zipper is smooth. Everything about these shorts is made perfectly for my needs and body type. I dunno why I ever bother trying other brands.

36 inches is 36 inches, buying more.
I am buying more. All the comments about fit, the 36's are 36 inches around in the waist (see pic). There was a lot of comment about the length in comments, I am 5 feet 4 inches tall (about 163cm) and these come right to my knees. They are also cut generously so there is plenty of room for the "jewels". I like to wear my shorts at my waist just above the hips. Fabric feels durable and the pockets are nice and deep. Front pocket is deep enough that I can put my keys and change in there and they don't feel like they will fall out. Cargo pockets have 2 snaps each to close them. The review by M. Ross is still accurate except for the comment about fit. If you order 36's they should measure 36 inches around the waist. See the picture, they do.

Very Inconsistent Sizing from Wrangler
I absolutely love these shorts when I can find a pair that fit. I wear the Ripstop Ranger long pants and shorts every day but Wrangler has some real manufacturing problems. We all know that pants will vary in size somewhat based on how they are mass stamped patterns and the thick piles of material will shift and move while being cut this way, and different seamstresses sewing them together. But I've also noticed that where the button is placed at the waste varies by up to an inch. At a local store I tried on 10 pairs to find 2 pair that fit. I took a shot in the dark ordering them online and failed miserably. I ordered 2 pair and neither fit. I would have to recommend trying to find them locally and planning on spending a lot of time in the changing room trying them on and hopefully you can find a couple pair that fit. Thankfully Amazon has free shipping and returns on these so it wasn't a total loss.

poor design
I don't know who designed these but they obviously don't work in todays field. The hammer loop for one thing is not suitable for an actual hammer, at best a small hobby hammer an older lady would keep to put small nails in a wall to hang pictures. It is overly small and I had to go out of the way to stretch it out even popping some of the threads just to strategically maneuver a hammer in. The crotch rides so high I actually had to sag them down to wear properly I ordered the same size as I always do and these are dreadful on the boys to wear normally and this from a guy that goes through a pair of work pants a month that kind of discomfort and agitation ain't good for productivity. the only reason I didn't one star these nut busters is because the material is the only saving grace surprisingly enough. they hold their own but after the weather got cold (which I loath) I was actually relieved cuz I tossed these bad boys out. I only left this for the heavy working folks I can't speak for more casual wear but if you are in a field where you are constantly back forth up down and sideways and constantly in need of tool access on the fly tread lightly on buying these bad boys.

Wash cold line dry
The instructions warn to wash cold and line dry. If you do not they will shrink, a lot.The leather looking patch on the right hip pocket is faux leather and does not breath. Presumably its purpose is to accommodate the metal clip of a pocket knife. The rear pockets are lined with Cordura nylon which should prevent your wallet from wearing all the way through. The watch pocket is larger than typical which I like because I keep several pair of earplugs in it.The cargo pockets have snaps, one at each corner. I prefer Velcro. I find snaps pull open too easily and are more time consuming to snap then Velcro. There is a forward facing open pocket sewn on one cargo pocket that catches on things and is too narrow for a smart phone but would work for a flip phone or a folding ruler or smaller pliers. Overall the quality seems high.

No other pants/shorts come close!
Just like the pants, minus the reinforced knee area. Huge pockets fit everything I need in them. The length of the short ride just at the knee or slightly above. It will be a sad day if Wrangler ever stops making the ranger pants and shorts. I threw away all my other pants and shorts as they are just crap compared to these pants and shorts. Affordably priced. The only thing I will say negative about this line of product is that all the colors that are not the bark color fade in the higher wear areas rather quickly (knees). That's not a game changer for me though as these pants and shorts are bomb proof.

Perfect!
Great shorts! I have been wearing Wrangler Riggs pants for a couple of years now and was pleased to find these Riggs cargo shorts. They solve three of my pet peeves with most other shorts: (1) They have deep pockets with a traditional pocket cut. It seems most shorts these days have a shallow pocket, and even worse, have a pocket cut that drops almost straight down. Every time you sit down whatever is in your pocket falls out. These Riggs shorts have no such problem: (2) The waistband fastener is riveted metal, not a sewn on plastic button that will inevitably break: (3) These are knee length shorts that do not ride up when you sit. They are also 100% cotton in a rip stop weave that is both cool and durable. Triple stitching in the inseam. Plenty of pockets. A perfect pair of shorts in my book.

Think I got a fake pair
I've bought this brand for 8 years now, and know the cargo, carpenter and technician shorts and pants very well. I wear a 32 and they are a bit loose on me usually and drop down off my waist, with the technician style being the loosest if anyone wants a comparison. I ordered a pair of cargo shorts in 32 and could not do them up. They are most definitely made wrong. I can get them on because I'm skinny and the zipper partway up but that's it. When I look at them compared to all the other Riggs I have, I think these are knock offs.

The worst cut I've ever tried in my life
If you have huge manly legs with the tiny ass of a pre-teen girl, these will fit you fine. And you better have those exact proportions because there is absolutely zero stretch to these.

Nice shorts
If you are used to carhartt clothing these are a great alternative however order at least one size bigger. They fit small in comparison to Carhartt.

Go up a size
These are great shorts. I like them as much as my carhartt shorts. However I’m a easy 34” waist in carhartt but a tight 36” in these.
