can you adjust the water volume with this valve meaning how fast the water comes out

Only if you want cold water... like most single-handle faucets, you have to go past half-way to get the hot water to start blending in. You would need to add a separate inline valve to adjust flow. I kinda wanted that, but figured I could live without it. If you take quick showers you probably don't need the extra valve, but if you like to cut off the water while you soap-up, or if you like to turn the pressure down a bit and stand in the shower for awhile, the extra valve would be worthwhile.

What does the knob on top do?

The upper knob is the diverter.

The 04447000 is a Pressure Balance control The 04231000 is a Thermostatic controlPressure balance is the type of control where you would turn on the water by turning the controls. Water will start cold, the further you turn the hotter the water will get.The Thermostatic control allows you to preset a particular temperature and just turn the water on to the same temperature every time.

I have this valve and water is leaking from the shower head. Must be a cartilage? What is the fix for this ?
