How can I avoid killing a hedgehog with a rat trap.

I don't agree. (IM0) Not hedgehog freindly but im not an expert. It would certainly take an immature hog. I guess use chocolate reduces the chances.

Can squirrels get trapped?

A grey squirrel may get trapped. Grey squirrels are often attracted to the same bait as rats, especially if you are using peanut butter.

We caught one rat and then it stopped working, now rats go in and out helping themselves to food. Wondering if I can fix it

Anyone else finding the bate being ate but the trap is not going off?

Definitely. I had a camera set up watching them and they very cleverly knock it about until the bait falls out and if it doesn’t they leave it alone. My suggestion is to use something like smooth peanut butter that will not freely fall and stick a tiny piece of their favourite food in it (strawberry) hope this helps. Also a very good deterrent is to spray peppermint oil around their favourite spots. (Mix around 10 drops in water and shake it up then use a spray bottle and spray everywhere - they hate it.
