It's "water-resistant", not "Waterproof". To be considered fully waterproof requires fully taped seams and zippers. This duffel will stand up to moderate rain. But would not stand up to be fully submerged in water.

Q: How comfortable is this duffel bag worn as a backpack compared to a dedicated backpack?

It's definitely a duffel with a hands-free mode (backpack) for carrying it. The bag isn't structured or padded like a dedicated large backpack, and doesn't have the helper straps, ventilation panel, etc that a large backpack would have, either. So definitely not as comfortable for extended wearing (especially heavily loaded) as something like a backpacking pack.

Q: Do the shoulder straps detach?

No, the shoulder straps do not detach. They are sewn on at one end and the other has the adjuster/sliders. They form the straps to carry the bag regular when not used on your back.

Q: Is this too large to bring on for a carry on flight?

No, we have used it as carry on.
