Q: Which is better, this or a boot for a trailer?

This is pretty good, fits any receiver and is sturdy. I also have a boot, one that clamps on each side of the wheel, so much easier to use than the so called Denver Boot. If someone wants your trailer bad enough locks and boots won't make any difference, but it sure will slow them down.

Q: Are the keys universal or unique to each lock?

The keys are unique to the lock. I ordered the 4 pack. The keys for one lock only works on that lock.

Q: Will this lock work on a gooseneck trailer 2 5/16 hitch receiver?

Yes, it works on mine, and the description of it states the sizes it will fit.
