Is it possible to just use one spout for several containers? I.E., take off the ordinary spout and install this one, when one wants to pour fuel?

Does this spout store inside the Rotopax 2 gallon can?

I just bought a new Rotopax 1 gallon, and this spout is several inches too long to fit inside the can. I see some older answers say it will fit; perhaps the older cans do not have the plastic mesh filter inside the can like mine does.
