This phone is unlocked from the factory for use on any network, check and make sure the GSM bands it supports are ones used in Israel. I have had this phone about 2 weeks and it has exceeded my expectations. It's quickly replacing my iPad even.

Q: does it need a case like regular phones do?

I doesn't need a case, but I for one think this phone looks really good with it's polished metal edges and faux carbon fiber back. Now with no case the silver metal sides and carbon fiber will get nicked, scuffed and damaged. This will not affect the phone as it is made to be dropped and what not. But it will make the phone look beat up, and for me I think the phone is too pretty to begin with to have all of that superficial damage. I use a case for mine, it was under $20 on Amazon and it fits very good.
